I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Safety & Correctional Services full-time

    Pros

I enjoy the autonomy in making my own schedule. I enjoy helping the offenders and assisting with victim/public safety. I enjoy all of the vacation time.

    Cons

There is too much focus on the adminstrative tasks, which management seems to solely focus on, instead of the work we do with the offenders.

    Advice to Management

Stop adding to the unmanageable administrative tasks, especially those added to the OTIS Elite and LSI-OR. There should be more PDPs instead of CMRs, which only seem to focus on the negative.

    Pros

Security, pay, benefits, opportunity, vacation, flexibility, experience, diversity.

    Cons

Vicarious trauma, isolation, being micromanage at times, not enough of us, too much paperworkpaperwork to do, not enough wellness opportunities. The Court treating is like a verification service when lawyers should be doing that. There is a lack of resources for mental health offenders.

    Advice to Management

Don't micro-manage. It's insulting and damaging. We are professionals and know our job. Guide but don't hover.

    Pros

    - everyone is very friendly, willing to help out
    - work hours, don't need to stay past 5pm
    - mentorship (if you ask for it)

    Cons

    - slow at times, not much work to be done
    - managers usually too busy to give students any real work

    Advice to Management

    - consider giving students more responsibility to develop their skills
