I worked at OpenBet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work life balance The management within Australia is/was competent and cared about the employees Fun team to work with Really smart engineers Occasionally interesting problems arise and it's a fun challenge as an engineer to find a solution

    Cons

Everything you heard about the tech being legacy is wrong. It's not legacy, it's ancient. You should be a paleontologist to be working with something that ancient. The primary language used is TCL and the database is Informix, enough said. Pay is much lower than what you could earn at competitors. Let's just say you are looking at a 25-30% raise if you switch jobs. The local management within Australia is great, but I can't say the same about the ones at the top of the food chain. The company has been sold thrice in the few years I have been there. Their primary focus is constantly looking for higher bidders instead of focusing on making a sustainable product or rewriting the decades old code. The tech debt is, well let's just say at Chernobyl levels and it's a testament to the engineers that the product is still managing to hold well even though it's dated.

    I worked at OpenBet full-time

    Pros

    - Sugary treats once a month - Nice offices - Free coffee - Free fruit - Generous holidays - Free canned soda, while supplies last - Nice location

    Cons

    - Little room for career progression - Very corporate (much red-tape) - Poor salary - Occasionally uncivil management - Big on micromanagement - No certifications offered - Tech stack very niche and out-dated - Feels like a factory - Doesn't acknowledge individual contributions - Very little useful training - Doesn't seem to care about investing in its staff - TCL

I worked at OpenBet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Sydney team was full of fun people to work with. Good work culture (PS4 and table tennis in the office). Free fruit, biscuits, etc. Transition from waterfall to agile was painful but things had pretty much settled when I left in 2015. Management and clients were supportive and sufficiently involved in agile processes. Flexible working hours. Typically 7.5 hour days and no weekends (unless there was extra work and you agreed to it – this was paid overtime). Five weeks of annual leave a year.

    Cons

Antiquated tech stack (TCL was by and large the main language used). Salary was lacklustre. I've heard both of these have improved since I left but not sure how much.

I have been working at OpenBet full-time

    Pros

Fantastic benefits, great office, really good work life balance. Free fruit is a big plus. Exciting to grow at such a quick pace.

    Cons

One might get stuck working on old legacy systems/languages (TCL). Other than that I can't think of any cons

I have been working at OpenBet full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working with clever people in a dynamic environment with interesting challenges always coming across. Flat hierarchy makes it easy to approach people. Opportunity to work with some of the largest clients in the industry. Worldwide presence

    Cons

A lot of the software is still being done in tcl, a dated language which is not industry standard. Top heavy structure makes it difficult to get promoted after a certain point.

I worked at OpenBet full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Friendly, professional, highly intelligent colleagues. Agile environment. A chance to work on high-transaction websites where performance is key. The gaming industry has some highly complex products: if you like analysis, then you'll find much to get your teeth into here.

    Cons

The core platform is coded in C and scripted in a niche scripting language (TCL). Be sure that you can get on with TCL before you apply: there isn't any decent IDE support and you'll work mainly in Vi; TCL doesn't support modern programming paradigms (read a book on it *before* applying); and there aren't many job opportunities in TCL. This sort of environment favours those who have encyclopedic memories for large code bases. Lastly, when I worked there they used CVS (although I think there was talk of moving to Git in the future). Be sure that you can get on with CVS too.
