True open source mentality (most of the work is contributed upstream), fully remote and async, very high quality team -- and nice people!
Achieving what is expected can be challenging, especially at the beginning while learning everything, so it's better to have in mind that it will be a significant effort. It's possible to get to a good pace though - most people who pass the trial period end up staying for a very long time.1

Everything is set up for effective remote work. Requirements are detailed and precise, and developers can manage their own time. Standards are high, with rigorous code reviews and very talented colleagues. Strong free software ethos - everything is open source.
Some of the work is a bit tedious (lots of DevOps tasks). The edX project has a lot of stakeholders, so each change goes through several rounds of review and the pace of development can be very slow.7
