    Pros

    - Management has become very transparent and trying to engage employees. Also increase in social budgets and new laptops is welcome
    - Interesting work - sometimes very hectic though but you get reasonable flexibility as long as you do your job
    - Exposure to clients early on is good and apparently my client is expanding the contract so probably client like us too - which is good

    Cons

    - Sometimes work gets hectic even with flexible hours.
    - Would like to work on other interesting projects I keep hearing about from other emplotyees but it has been difficult to roll off from my current project

    Advice to Management

Keep up with what you are doing and rotate staff more often

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Free Friday Lunches
Great office Location ( New jersey Office)
    Happy Hours

    Cons

There are more managers than people who actually do the work (coding and analysis).
At a single time , 2-3 managers will give you ideas to implement and everyone expects the results. If you complain, they will ask you to manage time properly.

Signal Hub is Very bad. They sell this product to many clients ( who buy it because its cheaper in market) but there are issues every day.

Work - Life balance is the worst.

They do not have enough money to give Bonus to everyone.

Do not get stuck in this company for more than a year or else you will be stuck for ever.

    Advice to Management

E3 , F3 does not change the working conditions. Let your employees have some life as well.

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people you will work with (especially at Manager and below levels) are wonderful, creative & very smart.
You can (on occasion) get exposed to interesting problems at blue-chip clients and because there's very little organization there's an opportunity to step up
New CEO (Bernhard Namm) is an excellent human being. Honest, smart, clear in his ideas and very cognizant of the multitude of problems the company has. I wish him the best but worry that he has inherited a poisoned chalice

    Cons

In one word: Arnab Gupta (owner and previous CEO)
By most accounts he's interested in 'big ideas' and his own bottom line but does not have the temperament or will to build a real organization that supports its employees and focuses only on those problems for which we are best suited
Management has been a mess, part of it is that they are way out of their depth and that their positions have been earned through loyalty rather than merit

    Advice to Management

Empower Bernhard, he's the right leader with the right ideas. Become very focused in what we do and pay a lot more attention to internal talent management before everybody in the US office leaves.

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People at manager and below levels are great
        - Smart: top schools, top performers
        - Personable: normal people you'd want to grab a drink with
        - Creative: willing to suggest new ideas, and try to learn new things rapidly (as the firm shifts focus)

The idea behind "predictive analytics" is a good one. That said, so is the idea to time travel. Success takes more than an idea. You need to be able to execute on it. Execution is not hiring a bunch of smart people. You need leadership and direction.

    Cons

    Employees are Mistreated
      - Pay is below market, especially for the hours put in
      - You work 80+ hour weeks, only to be told retroactively you won't get a bonus (3+ months after you were supposed to get it, with ZERO communication or lies in the interim)
      - I have been bonus eligible for 4 years here: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012: No bonus in 2009 (financial crisis, understandable), decent bonuses in 2010 and 2011, No bonus in 2012 (even though we were told all year it was our best year ever). 50% bonus rate is unacceptable.
       - Management is sneaky, deceitful, and totally unethical: Both times we got zero bonuses, we were strung along by lies. Management would tell us bonuses were "delayed" for weeks, then months, then complete silence on the matter, then the hammer would drop and we'd be told the truth. They're literally just trying to squeeze water out of rocks.
       - More unethical practices: They closed the Paris office and told the employees they'd have the option to transfer. Then, they stopped answering all communications from the Paris employees, declared bankruptcy in France, and didn't offer transfers (after months of saying they would and leaving the employees in limbo). The French employees had to scramble to find jobs, after being lied to for months. On top of that, management told everyone that the French employees simply didn't accept the transfer offers.
       - You're still expected to work like a consultant, but be paid like

    Horrible Execution by Management
       - Senior Management was tasked with facilitating the shift from "consulting" to "technology / product". They have failed. Horribly.
       - Whenever someone who knows what they are doing in the big data / product world (e.g. senior folks from SAP, Oracle, etc.) is brought in, they realize what a mess Opera is and leave within 6 months.
       - Many managers and principals are former consultants, and have no idea what they're doing in analytics projects or product driven projects. Not their fault - they're consultants, but it makes projects extremely frustrating. They haven't been trained, and many have no idea how to deliver a product driven project.
        - Horrible cash management: Hired tons of scientists and sales people who have yet to deliver anything really, while the consultants deliver project after project in "services", working typical consulting hours. Then there is no cash to pay the revenue generating consultants, because cash was burned on scientists, sales people, and failed products.
       - Everything is pretty much smoke and mirrors. Product names and ideas keep changing, but there is nearly nothing tangible to show for it. Consultants are then tasked with spinning this smoke and mirrors into something during business development and sales efforts

    Offshore Model
       - The offshore model is extremely frustrating. On analytics projects, huge chunks of teams are in Shanghai and India
       - Hours become unmanageable if you want to be in any way productive due to time zone differences
       - Turnaround times are slow because of the timezones. Though the "24 hour model" is pitched, what it really means is everything takes at least twice as long to do because you can only talk to your team at the beginning and end of each day, and deliverables can then be reviewed, with more wait time in between
      - Communication can be very difficult and inefficient. Lengthy, detailed emails are required, compared to traditional consulting firms where you can just sit with your team, brainstorm, review data together in real time, etc. Huge waste of time, and very stressful, because if the communication is not clear, you lose an entire day of work from the offshore team
       - It is all stemmed from Opera's reluctance to bring teams to the same location to work (because this costs money)

    Advice to Management

Remember that your "resources" are people. Though we claim to be a technology and product firm, everyone knows we have basically no real ground breaking products or technology. The magic is in the analytics done on bespoke projects and in the delivery of services projects by consultants. Those results are driven by people. The people are what makes this firm tick, and you are driving your best people out.

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you're liked by certain partners, you'll do very very well here. If you want to win, you have to play the right way.

    Cons

Lots of office politics. Owner is rude to partners, hence partners rude to managers and managers rude to associates. Culture really trickles down from the top and when I was there 2008 - 2010 (granted it was the financial downturn), the environment at work and projects were really hostile. Your happiness highly depending on which partner(s) you worked with.

    Advice to Management

Less politics. More transparency. Hire more respectful people who don't verbally abuse others and work employees to their death.

Current Employee - Senior Associate in New York, NY

    Pros

Fast growing, great career opportunities, very down to earth people, some really good projects. Very challenging - need to prove oneself in a firm with no institutional way of doing things (it is just 4 years old after all). Blue chip clients. Pay is slightly higher than typical, for high performance people. Very international culture - more than 30 nationalities in a company of 300 people. CEO Arnab Gupta (and some of the senior leaders) are thought leaders but still open and accessible.

    Cons

Firm leaning more and more on analytics. Very few middle managers command respect. Very few domain experts.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time in providing feedback and grooming people, be more consistent with firm branding (internal and external)

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Clear vision and mission - To help companies extract & use intelligence, at scale, hidden in all their enterprise wide data assets ; using both technology & human intelligence . Proposition around analytics has evolved over the years and is now very clearly defined & differentiated from some of the other firms operating in this space.
Innovative business model - Offerings built to add value to firms on both ends of the big data maturity pyramid ; point solutions & analytics as a service for some of the less mature firms and enterprise wide software for some of the more mature firms
Culture - Very entrepreneurial ; Freedom to innovate ; Freedom to shape your own career : Multitude of roles to chose from - Could work as a business consultant, as a product manager or as a technology expert or ALL ! taking on extremely challenging & ambiguous business problems and building very creative & sustainable solutions, using technology & human insight, to solve them is ingrained in the DNA of the firm

    Cons

lack of a very well defined career path - This is good and bad both - Good as you have the flexibility to discover what you like and accordingly shape up your career and bad because you may get lost ! (especially when you have very clear career goals)

    Advice to Management

Now that the transformation to a big data analytics company is complete ; Need to be more aggressive in spreading awareness around the core mission of the company and how it differentiates itself from other companies in this space
