    Pros

Great career building experience in a very hot market (Predictive Analytics). The scientists/modelers are profoundly collaborative people who are have great faith in software (not necessarily software engineers). Flexible career options. Friday lunches, happy-hour, high-tea. Good community of people who are sincerely trying to succeed.

    Cons

Lack of IT and computing infrastructure conforming to industry standards is holding both analytics and software divisions. Dev-Ops team, which was functional, just disappeared entirely. Company has been steadily losing employees (about 1-3 a week) and laid-off all hiring staff in US. Factions between and within various offices deadlock any meaningful software development, in turn causing significant cash-burn... without any enabling revenue. Competing in over-saturated markets because of several employee's and manager's history with Fair-Isaac

    Pros

Many when I started, none when I left

    Cons

Circa 2014, the ownership and top management in their infinite wisdom tried to force fit a Technology Product model into what was a fledgling Analytics Services company with remnants of a (rather successful) management consulting business. That's when the trouble started. There were arbitrary changes and inane business decisions that failed to recognize the core strengths and went all out trying to sell an... unmarketable and non-viable product which no one wanted. There was no regard for employees and hiring and firing decisions started to be made based on personal preferences of those on the top. Then the inevitable happened when the company failed to live up to investors' expectations and was taken over by the creditors. The new brass is trying hard to paint a rosy picture despite a huge (and expected) wave of lay offs, but to the wise it is crystal clear that the company has no future. Period.

    Advice to Management

The company is beyond repair. You have taken over the reigns to recover what was owed to you. Do your thing and wind down asap. Do not spoil more careers by selling pipe dreams.

    I worked at Opera Solutions

    Pros

Interesting industry domain, but the company lacks qualified people to take it to the next level and hence this has been a startup for the last ten years! Pros - Initial exposure to big data industry, interesting challenges , startup environment.

    Cons

Cons - Lack of talented people, especially in key positions. Software/Analytics - Most of the developers are just out of school, managers and leads have no prior experience, there is no concept of writing code efficiently to industry standards, which translates to sub-standard products. Analyst/Associates - Very Very few have Math/Analytics background, Most of them are just head counts for projects.... Vice-President/Directors - Expertise in writing emails. Pre-sales - no sales experience required. IT/Technology - Being a big data company, there is no understanding or expertise in hadoop/computer architecture.Constant hadoop issues and no resolution.

    Pros

People at manager and below levels are great - Smart: top schools, top performers - Personable: normal people you'd want to grab a drink with - Creative: willing to suggest new ideas, and try to learn new things rapidly (as the firm shifts focus) The idea behind "predictive analytics" is a good one. That said, so is the idea to time travel. Success takes more than an idea. You need to be able to... execute on it. Execution is not hiring a bunch of smart people. You need leadership and direction.

    Cons

Employees are Mistreated - Pay is below market, especially for the hours put in - You work 80+ hour weeks, only to be told retroactively you won't get a bonus (3+ months after you were supposed to get it, with ZERO communication or lies in the interim) - I have been bonus eligible for 4 years here: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012: No bonus in 2009 (financial crisis, understandable), decent bonuses in 2010 and 2011,... No bonus in 2012 (even though we were told all year it was our best year ever). 50% bonus rate is unacceptable. - Management is sneaky, deceitful, and totally unethical: Both times we got zero bonuses, we were strung along by lies. Management would tell us bonuses were "delayed" for weeks, then months, then complete silence on the matter, then the hammer would drop and we'd be told the truth. They're literally just trying to squeeze water out of rocks. - More unethical practices: They closed the Paris office and told the employees they'd have the option to transfer. Then, they stopped answering all communications from the Paris employees, declared bankruptcy in France, and didn't offer transfers (after months of saying they would and leaving the employees in limbo). The French employees had to scramble to find jobs, after being lied to for months. On top of that, management told everyone that the French employees simply didn't accept the transfer offers. - You're still expected to work like a consultant, but be paid like Horrible Execution by Management - Senior Management was tasked with facilitating the shift from "consulting" to "technology / product". They have failed. Horribly. - Whenever someone who knows what they are doing in the big data / product world (e.g. senior folks from SAP, Oracle, etc.) is brought in, they realize what a mess Opera is and leave within 6 months. - Many managers and principals are former consultants, and have no idea what they're doing in analytics projects or product driven projects. Not their fault - they're consultants, but it makes projects extremely frustrating. They haven't been trained, and many have no idea how to deliver a product driven project. - Horrible cash management: Hired tons of scientists and sales people who have yet to deliver anything really, while the consultants deliver project after project in "services", working typical consulting hours. Then there is no cash to pay the revenue generating consultants, because cash was burned on scientists, sales people, and failed products. - Everything is pretty much smoke and mirrors. Product names and ideas keep changing, but there is nearly nothing tangible to show for it. Consultants are then tasked with spinning this smoke and mirrors into something during business development and sales efforts Offshore Model - The offshore model is extremely frustrating. On analytics projects, huge chunks of teams are in Shanghai and India - Hours become unmanageable if you want to be in any way productive due to time zone differences - Turnaround times are slow because of the timezones. Though the "24 hour model" is pitched, what it really means is everything takes at least twice as long to do because you can only talk to your team at the beginning and end of each day, and deliverables can then be reviewed, with more wait time in between - Communication can be very difficult and inefficient. Lengthy, detailed emails are required, compared to traditional consulting firms where you can just sit with your team, brainstorm, review data together in real time, etc. Huge waste of time, and very stressful, because if the communication is not clear, you lose an entire day of work from the offshore team - It is all stemmed from Opera's reluctance to bring teams to the same location to work (because this costs money)

    Advice to Management

Remember that your "resources" are people. Though we claim to be a technology and product firm, everyone knows we have basically no real ground breaking products or technology. The magic is in the analytics done on bespoke projects and in the delivery of services projects by consultants. Those results are driven by people. The people are what makes this firm tick, and you are driving your best people out.

    Pros

Although some of Opera’s best people have recently left or been pushed out, the company still has some very bright minds knowledgeable not only in Analytics but also in several client industries.

    Cons

The CEO and main shareholder is after a quick cash-out and is pushing changes that are harmful to the mid- and long-term future of the company. Morale is extremely low and most decent people currently interview with other companies, several key scientists and the heads of the London and Paris offices have left already and the quality of client work starts decreasing. HR policies and direction are inexistent and... bonuses have been pathetic (or nil) for the last couple of years… Opera was built with a great business model, combining the insights of advanced analytics with the deep understanding that ex-management consultants can bring to specific industries. For years, it had a clear advantage over other big data market players. Now, it endeavors to copy the business model of software houses but without having neither the DNA nor the relevant resources for it… add to that the departure of so many good people and the constant changes in the leadership group… disaster is looming.

I have been working at Opera Solutions

    Pros

Opera is doing some very interesting analytics work - we are close to the forefront of the applied analytics movement. The junior staff at Opera is an incredibly fun and smart group of people. I can learn from everyone and I enjoy hanging out with them both during work and on the weekends - it's that kind of place.

    Cons

The more interesting analytics based engagements are staffed with mostly data scientists, not business consultants. The business consultants are more often staffed on procurement projects which can be interesting the first few times but get old very quickly. There are a few important stakeholders at the top of the firm who can easily determine the course of your career at Opera - if you're on their good side... that's great, if not good luck.

I have been working at Opera Solutions

    Pros

Fast growing, great career opportunities, very down to earth people, some really good projects. Very challenging - need to prove oneself in a firm with no institutional way of doing things (it is just 4 years old after all). Blue chip clients. Pay is slightly higher than typical, for high performance people. Very international culture - more than 30 nationalities in a company of 300 people. CEO Arnab Gupta (and... some of the senior leaders) are thought leaders but still open and accessible.

    Cons

Firm leaning more and more on analytics. Very few middle managers command respect. Very few domain experts.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time in providing feedback and grooming people, be more consistent with firm branding (internal and external)

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working on niche technologies, emerging fast as a renowned name in big data technologies with its wide range of solutions to big data problems. The overall team is young and dynamic, which is a fun to work with. Leadership team is approachable and listen to your issues. Specifically mentioning Shishir Kapoor (Centre head- Noida) is one of the best leaders. He is very approachable and himself, and is involved with... the team directly. Farhan Baaqri (CTO) is a nice mentor and good leader who encourages the team members to perform their best and provides you the room to perform and grow. He is a great manager to work with. Admin and HR staff ( Nomita Bakshi and Shweta Gupta ) are good, supportive and innovative at bringing in new ideas and HR policies. Friday free lunch is there, which I miss now :-) Flexi timings and work from home are some of the great policies. Overall this is a good company to work for and I would like to work again for Opera if a matching opportunity comes up.

    Cons

Its a small group, The process and policies are not clearly defined. Work is not process driven. Not many industry best practices are followed. Lot of scope for improvement in IT and software. People are not given opportunities to move across the boundaries like movement between IT, software and analytics is not there. No job rotations, makes it monotonous after some time.

    Advice to Management

Should try to implement industry best practices like ITIL and CMM Should consider job movements across different groups based on employees interest and capabilities.
