I worked at Opes Advisors full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I thought that the ability to advise clients on more than just their mortgage would be interesting.

    Cons

Do they even want to do mortgages? Horrible fulfillment. No sales support.

    Advice to Management

    Maybe just do wealth management.

I have been working at Opes Advisors full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management is very supportive and knowledgable. Peers are excellent team players and there is a god level of knowledge exchange. Compensation is very competitive and OT and generous bonus is offered depending on volume.

    Cons

Work load can be a bit overwhelming, however management is quick to step in and re-assign tasks as needed.

    Advice to Management

Keep the positive lines of communication open.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Opes Advisors full-time

    Pros

Good place to work during the "up" times. Well-meaning people who are good at what they do: mortgage. Do attempt to provide education for employees.

    Cons

Difficult place to work during the "down" times. Employees are always asked to do more with less, with no sign of a light at the end of the tunnel. The true culture of the company doesn't really extend past the upper layers of management. Little transparency, few opportunities for advancement and heavy favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that if you want to compete in this market, you need wholesale change - not just a dollar thrown here or there. Ensure managers at every level are giving regular, documented feedback to those they manage as well as opportunities for promotions and raises. Solve the revolving door of departmental leadership.

I worked at Opes Advisors full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

What I loved most about my time at Opes was being surrounded by a group of vibrant and friendly personalities! When business was good, things kept moving at a quick pace and there was never a dull moment!

    Cons

It was difficult to get upper level support when we were running into external issues. While my department wasn't impacted quite a frequently as others with too much work, I saw many of my coworkers have to spend an excessive amount of time in the office (over 10 hours a day) to just keep their work up to date, let alone get ahead. Operations and Secondary get barely any acknowledgement from the powers that be for helping get loans through the pipeline compared to MAs. High turnover.

    Advice to Management

Look in your own ranks to see who has talent and is willing to grow with the organization. It seems that managements first inclination is to hire from outside rather than support existing staff. Also, I saw way too many layoffs and too much employee turnover that quality suffered because of it. Susan and Jonathan, you guys seriously need to look past what your VPs are telling you and practice what you preach if you're going to claim that Opes is one big cozy family.

    Pros

This is the best company I have worked for in my 20 years in the industry. Communication lines are wide open and the company offers numerous ways to learn and grow. These are some of the most knowledgable MA's I have ever worked with and most of the processors are spot on. If you have initiative and take responsibility for your own performance this is the company culture for you. If you need constant guidance and prefer your hand held then not so much.

    Cons

None! Management in my opinion is on the right path for future success and longevity.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and continue to reward your employees that get the job done. Keep building your core team and weed out the weak links.
