I worked at Opex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice environment, clean and quiet for the most part. Bosses who acted like they cared. Good feeling of productivity.

    Cons

Dead end job! It was all about who you knew and who liked who. Pretty insulting raises. Hard work was not rewarded. Laziness was tolerated. Quality Control was compromised.

    Advice to Management

Pay a livable wage and dont show favoritism.

I have been working at Opex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

OPEX is in very interesting markets and has a very talented engineering team. OPEX is also growing very quickly, which means new and different work for team members. The business is family owned, very stable, and treats their everyone very fairly. There is very long tenure among employees because people enjoy their work and like the company.

    Cons

The overall company structure is pretty flat (which is good and bad - if you prove yourself, you can work on interesting things right away and have access to upper management).

    Advice to Management

Keep on innovating and taking calculated risks. The staff at OPEX is top-notch and very capable - Be sure to leverage everyone's potential.

I worked at Opex full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Well run family owned company, management are a bunch of straight shooters, and expect the same from their employees. Good benefits with low employee contributions, and they will with you if you work with them. Their Industrial Automation division seems to have a bright future, though the incoming and scanning division is on the decline. Worked with a great group of guys who always helped each other out.

    Cons

Incoming and Scanning division seems to be withering away, and certain service regions are better run than others. Low mileage reimbursement if you are a road warrior. No real chance for advancement from Field Tech unless you are willing to move to HQ or become an RSM.

    Advice to Management

Offer techs incentives to get certifications, like A+, etc. More mileage reimbursement would be good too, the current reimbursement barely covers gas and repairs.

I have been working at Opex full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company is growing at an exciting rate.
Opportunity for career advancement for hard working/detail oriented individual.
Great benefits with minimum personal contribution.
Headquarters offers many extra benefits as being an OPEX employee.
    Profit sharing and 401K match.
Owners reinvest in company to ensure future.

    Cons

Payscale is slightly lower than industry standards but the benefits make up for it. Pay is brought up closer to standards if there for short amount of time and display good work ethic.

    Advice to Management

Have been here less than a year. Things are full steam ahead in all aspects. No advice to give because currently, everything seems to have a positive outlook.

I worked at Opex full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Family owned business so no fear of a buyout. The work was steady and no layoffs.

    Cons

Not sure why they hire unqualified, immature people for regional field service management but the technician turnover rate if very high because of this fact. Technicians are treated like the stepchild in the company. The mail processing business is on the decline so they are struggling to create new products and enter new markets. They don't test products enough before releasing for sale so the field technician are stuck trying to make the machines run properly.

    Advice to Management

Hire some regional managers that have a clue on how to manage their team.

I worked at Opex full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Never laid off but was getting close due to a loss of customer accounts.

    Cons

Dying business market, when I started there were 15 service accounts in the region, when I left there were only 5.

Very low pay with a weekly bonus that was used as carrot in front of the horse. Made a mistake on your weekly paperwork? No problem, you only lost part of your bonus.

Regional management was a joke. Uneducated, clueless, short fuse, bad attitude, constantly showed favoritism, unprofessional, condescending...... A mild way to describe the Regional manager I had the unpleasant experience of working for.

Communication and interaction with upper management was disgraceful. They acted as if they were too good to interact with technicians.

    Advice to Management

Take a lesson on running a successful company. Hire decent managers to run the field service regions. Don't hire internal employees with zero post secondary educations just because they will work long hours for little pay. Spend a little money and get some decent management and maybe, just maybe you won't have to spend so much money training new technicians year after year.
