I have been working at Oportun full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Oportun has some incredibly smart people that are genuinely focused on a mission they believe in. I've learned a ton here. The senior management is some of the best I've worked for.

    Cons

Over the last 6 months Oportun has gone from a 4-5 star company to a 1-2 star company. Oportun has always been lightly staffed at HQ, but it's now at a ridiculous level.

We've hired a ton of new VP's and Directors that are all good picks individually. And like all VP's, they've come in with their own lists of priorities, projects, and new ways of doing things. And all of these projects require support from across the business.

The problem is, Oportun barely had enough staff to manage day-to-day operations before this. Suddenly everyone has massive projects added to their work load and is just expected to deal with it. People are dropping the ball on their day jobs just to keep up. It's pretty much become expected that anything not going directly to the CEO or CFO will either get done half-assed, or not at all.

Reasonable managers have turned unreasonable. requests for support typically go unanswered. Asking management to prioritize is only answered by demands to work more hours.

    Advice to Management

Determine support needs BEFORE taking on major projects. Realize that some projects may need to happen sequentially instead of in parallel, because we aren't staffed to execute. Alternatively, find some things we're doing today that aren't important to keep doing.

I have been working at Oportun part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The objective of Oportun is to give the opportunity to build credit to the underserved hispanic population. Which in all honesty did make me feel good about the job I was doing and I noticed the difference it made in some people's lives.
Oportun is a good starting company for gaining professional skills if you've never worked in a office environment beforehand.
You definitely learn many skills such as time-management, multitasking, teamwork, marketing techniques, how to use excel and spreadsheets, and how to handle difficult customer situations.
There are incentives if you reach your goals every month.
You meet many people and work with a diverse group of people!

    Cons

The company expects us to do marketing daily without the marketing salary.
There was also not ONE but THREE cases where co-workers of mine had been victims of property crime while they were on the job and the company did NOTHING.
There is absolutely no room for advancement, (unless you live in California).
The company is still going trial-and-error stages so it may introduce one project one month, and take it away the next month.

    Advice to Management

Invest in a quality marketing team and the company (and the employees) will reap the rewards.
There should be more communication between management and the employees.

    Pros

A great mission and some committed leaders.
    Good work life balance

    Cons

The technology is way behind including our agile processes. Embarassing.
CIO is not technical. Better at managing career than work.

    Advice to Management

Invest in critical talent to bring Oportun up to speed with other fintech companies.

I have been working at Oportun part-time

    Pros

I like the fact that we help people build a better future by building their credit through a loan with better apr better payments so it feels good to help people out when you're part of that especially in a time of need. The job is simple once you get the hang of it

    Cons

The positions are very limited and needs more growth in developing employees but is still growing and they did say the my were going to have bigger positions to grow but just not yet.

    Advice to Management

Focus on improving phone center skills, we work in the front end and sometimes they confuse clients, or keep transferring them to different lines, or sometimes they can't understand things that could improve as the company keeps growing so clients can be happy and recommend their friends and family

    Cons

Fast-paced environment; requires high tolerance for ambiguity at times

    Advice to Management

Increase focus on development of internal talent pipeline vs. reliance on external hires for key leadership positions
