Great Growth Potential - Super Smart People
Apr 20, 2016 - in Arlington, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I LOVE it here! Ever since coming to Opower I've been mentored by my team and am constantly being challenged. They are open to new ideas and new ways of looking at things, and never settle for the 'way it's always been done'. I know I have the support of some very smart people and I can see my career growth potential here. It also doesn't hurt that they have some really great perks; dogs in the office, massages, free lunches on Friday, and so many other seemingly small things but things that add up and make it an environment you want to be in. It's not the free lunch that makes me stay here, it's the job and the mission. Couple that with great people and puppies... enough said.
Cons
We work some long hours at times and that can sometimes just be the job. But it's it's not all the time and it's pretty predictable which makes it manageable.

Well run business doing important work - Love working here!
Nov 21, 2014 - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There is great camaraderie within and across groups. The people who work here care a great deal about helping the company succeed and they work hard. There are a lot of extremely bright people here, but there is also a lot of humbleness. Arrogant people with big egos don't fit in. Folks also know how to have fun. It's a really amazing place to work!
Cons
It's a company that is still learning how to scale and find its way. A small detail, but they could use more conference rooms or private places when you need to work on something and you need to eliminate distractions. It's an all-open workplace, which isn't ideal 100% of the time.
Continue readingThanks for the review and diving into our company culture. It's nice to hear you are feeling this way - and you are right about the conference rooms! Good thing we're heading to a much larger office space in May.

Pros
-Great people who care passionately about energy efficiency. -Good medical benefits and leave policy once you hit manager or above
Cons
-your happiness will depend heavily on which team you get staffed on. There are some highly under-resourced teams that result in frustration and burn-out among employees.

Pros
Opower is not perfect but it's a company that has fun, believes in its product and attracts great people. I quickly learned how to adapt i a results-driven environment; if you're not comfortable juggling competing priorities and being kept on your toes, this isn't the place for you. The collaborative work culture is awesome - every single employee is willing to help and extend their expertise. Great mission, too! Other perks: catered lunches, weekly massages, semi-annual 'Innovation Days,' generous PTO policy, can bring your dog to the office, etc...
Cons
There have been a number of re-orgs lately (read: management shifts), which have been awkward. All signs point to things improving soon, though.

From the best workplace to the worst. Thanks, Oracle!
Jul 16, 2016 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Opower has been a fabulous place to work for the past 3+ years, but the Oracle acquisition has ruined all of that in less than 3 months. If you join today, you'll get to work with some of the smart, interesting people that made Opower great. But act quickly, because they'll all be gone soon. - Free snacks, free massages, and free Friday lunches are still around - Good office locations: near Montgomery BART in San Francisco and Courthouse Metro in Arlington/D.C.
Cons
- Opower's best and brightest are fleeing in droves, while only the most mediocre, least experienced, or most ossified employees remain to welcome our corporate overlords. It's only going to get worse over the next few months. - Oracle people and policies are already changing the fast-paced, get-it-done, fun-loving culture of Opower. We're going from Google Apps to Oracle's crappy "Beehive" alternative, from unlimited PTO to 2 weeks, and from an office of motivated talent to an office where people apply to new jobs all day, if they come to work at all. - Oracle ensured that the most talented Opower employees will leave by lowballing the Oracle job offers: our same base salaries but with unclear bonus plans, no equity, no transportation or gym subsidy, a much longer annual review cycle/uncertain promotion potential, and no more unlimited PTO. So, significantly less total compensation. But hey, there's 401k match! :| - No more mission-driven culture. Oracle could care less about saving energy or creating a clean energy future: they literally said as much in our employee town hall. (Sorry, having compostable forks in the Oracle cafeteria isn't the same thing.)

The people are awesome and the work is great. There is always a collaborative atmosphere that enables you to communicate with many different intelligent individuals. The employees are all passionate, intelligent and are the best of the best. I actually don't dread going to work as I used to. - Tons of Benefits - Great People who are passionate about what they do - Awesome and challenging work - You get out of it what you put into it - Very laid back yet professional setting
Cons
There is a lot of work. And that means you'll probably have to stay late. - Long hours - Average Pay
