I worked at Opportune full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great folks who are knowledgeable and experienced. Employees are generally very well taken-care of. Smaller firm size leads to much more accessible leadership.

    Cons

They were getting better, but the smaller size meant there wasn't a great deal of structure around developing more junior employees. The opportunities are there, but they must be sought out. Consultants in general are also at the mercy of the market -- consultants are at the mercy of what work gets sold by the MDs and partners, so some practices can be slow at times.

I have been working at Opportune full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Not many, generally chill culture

    Cons

They lie through their teeth about compensation for new and existing hires and they promote when it is advantageous to them to retain people.
Unlike other firms where the margins are thinner and the companies are bigger you will work harder here and be compensated less.

    Advice to Management

    Study ethics

    Pros

Smart people, great opportunities if you're known.

    Cons

While every company has their fair share of bad apples, Opportune seems to have too many on the managerial/director level. There are some very incompetent people here and you have to wonder how they've kept their job for so long.

    Advice to Management

Cut out the worthless people who's sole purpose is to create bureaucracy.

I have been working at Opportune full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have been there long enough and worked in many projects so I can make these observations:
    - Recommended for folks interested in finance/accounting and related disciplines
    - Not recommended for folks in IT, project management or software delivery
    - Neutral opinion for engineering/chemical disciplines, although promising as they remain mostly independent of the other silos
    - Great partners, MDs and teams in finance, accounting, outsourcing, valuation, engineering, etc.
    - Cannot say the same about the Process & Technology consulting partners and some MDs
    - Good office location with nice office decor
    - Almost all partners demonstrate a genuine interest in your well being
    - Projects are challenging and clients appreciate your work
    - Decent salary and so-so bonus
    - Good camaraderie at the lower levels of the organization
    - Great Christmas and summer pool party

    Cons

Unfortunately, the good also has the bad. In this case, I am not happy with some of the ways they handle situations and people:
    - Limited professional development - OK for early career but of no impact to others with some or advanced experience
    - You are only as good as the skills you bring with you or learn on your own
    - Individual personality analytics provided by a third party not necessarily for your benefit
    - Bench management is horrible - unless you proactively manage project assignments, you will be fired no matter whether you are there 5 weeks or 5 years - nobody has your back!
    - Need to eliminate some of the major consulting firm bad traits that made their way into this organization

    Advice to Management

    - Weed out some of the partners and MDs - you know who they are - the ones that kiss up but kick down and could not give a flip about others
    - Live by the social contract - you talk about it all the time but you execute to blindside people
    - Be honest about what you expect from people - otherwise hire them as 1099 so they can be better prepared for dealing with some of your MDs crap
    - If the results are not as expected, look at the process and correct the problem. Just looking for a person or persons to blame only perpetuates what is causing the undesired results

    I worked at Opportune full-time

    Pros

Good people to work with and good holiday parties. Generous bonus plan and they want you to have a life.

    Cons

If you are junior and not staffed on a project, they still expect you to come in the office instead of working remote.

I have been working at Opportune full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice office space. Staffed appropriately for projects- especially during downturn and still hiring (not sure why). Grown recently by making two acquisitions (a chemical engr firm, and a reservoir engr firm)- this is good news in a down oil market to see a company actually committing to growth and spending money. For the most part people are helpful and want to work- not many lazy bones people hanging around (dead weight).

    Cons

Lots of "type A" personalities here which can be intimidating and hard to communicate with. Everyone feels like they are an expert on everything and hard to see others opinions or suggestions.
Most everyone has the title of "Director" but I still have not figured out what this means.
At least one guy who is a "Managing Director" is not very nice, is loud and forceful and says things in meetings and to employees that skirts the line of professionalism. Although, this one guy is a rareity. The remaining MD's that I have spoken to seem genuine and nice.
Have a habit of taking jobs they may not be qualified for.
Really like the techs to do a lot of work, and everyone higher up just oversees the work.
People have overly "cheery" attitudes which can seem fake and not genuine.

    Advice to Management

Weed out the managing directors who have bad behavior and are inappropriate.

I have been working at Opportune (More than a year)

    Pros

Our people work hard to provide accurate and detailed information for clients. Everyone seems to take a high level of pride in their work and that spreads across all service lines.

    Cons

Honesty, I can't name specific cons about Opportune, I have only been here for about a year and nine months. I have not had any experiences that have reflected negatively on the company.

    Pros

The small size and grwoth mode allows for opportunity to truly contribute to the botom line

    Cons

Not much structure in work projects. Becuase most people come in experienced working with processes they found succesful and useful, it places an effort on junior resources to learn quickly and from various strategies

I have been working at Opportune full-time

    Pros

Leadership truly "gets it" and creates a very positive working environment. Intelligent and hardworking individuals from the consultant to partner levels, the firm is very active in the community, and most everyone knows how to have a good time when the work is done.

    Cons

Not the highest base pay at the entry level compared to similar roles/organizations, but more senior staff seem to be well compensated. Firm is growing quickly; may be experiencing slight growing pains.
