I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time

    Pros

The name? Otherwise no real pros to speak of.

    Cons

Senior management for digital have no clue to the digital world. They have worked together since Napster - and they literally always brag that they all worked together at Napster. Napster? That was eons ago in digital times. There are people in the workforce now that don't even know what Napster is. The other unfortunate thing is, because they all ONLY have worked with each other, they are hard to work with. They think they know everything (because they all worked together at Napster) and refuse to collaborate. Every person I know that came from the digital world (outside of Napster), as soon as they step into this office, within weeks they start looking for another job. It's sad. It's sad that upper management is in such denial and refuse to think the high turnover has anything to do with them. Go to the site for yourself if you don't believe me. Old school invasive ads everywhere, can't find anything, etc.

    Advice to Management

    1. Stop saying Napster.
    2. Get a new digital senior management team.
    3. Current senior management team: extremely good at managing up (that is why still there), likes name dropping; another is unreasonable (wants everything now and doesn't know how to prioritize so doesn't and refuses to budge) and unprofessional (literally yells at you; can be disrespectful when talking to you - in meetings in front of everyone); can't say something isn't working; tries to "build it" internally - so nothing actually works there or is a mess; there's also someone there that nobody really knows what he does or what his role is. The thing is, he is always making things up so if you think about what he's saying, none of it makes sense.

    Pros

The company had great values, great hours, great people, and a great message. Sometimes Oprah came to talk and gave inspirational messages about what we were trying to build in the company.

    Cons

The work was not challenging or creative as a designer because the people up at the very top saw things very conventionally.

I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get a paycheck and get to have high profile celeb encouters

    Cons

Poorly run company with unqualified management. Office politics that can only be referred to as "Game of OWNs'"
Don't let the OW name fool you, everyone I know still there are miserable or trying to leave.

Run like a production company (in this case Harpo), rather than a Network.

Nepotism is on a whole new level, as the management is comprised of Harpo employees.

Unrealistic, long work hours, no production timeline.

All creative is approved by the President, and on her terms and schedule leading to last minute creative delivering at the very second of air.

They have no branding knowledge, and constantly fumble with establishing themselves in the broadcast community.

The work space is open and very public.

It’s the blind leading the blind, and quite honestly the Wild, Wild West!

    Advice to Management

Work long enough to get your kicks of seeing/meeting celebs out of your system then start looking for a new job.

I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very forward thinking, new-age approach, with transcendental meditation and other interesting benefits. Compensation was at or above industry rates for a number of positions, though it varied.

    Cons

Management team was often in disagreement with executive team in long term strategy. Very difficult to discern between duo-leadership teams (of Harpo and Discovery).

    Advice to Management

Listen and value the opinions of the middle management team. There were too many very talented individuals who left because their expertise and opinions simply wasn't being valued.

I have been working at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits were fantastic and the people were great to work with. This is all dependent on the department you are in. My department the VP worked everyone very hard but he was protective of his team and so there were no layoffs as a result. A very agency style department. Pay scale was above average in the industry.

    Cons

No promoting within. Entertainment is a tough industry.

    Advice to Management

Promoting within would make the guarantee less turnover. Even if its a tittle change, its something. Overall great management though.
