I have been working at Oracle (Less than a year)

I worked at Oracle (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay was quite competitive. Health insurance options were also quite good.

    Cons

Engineers are quite talented, but are ruled by the management. Managers also act as scrum masters, and some of them take the word 'master' quite literally. No raises or bonus payouts the entire time I was employed. Some managers play favorites, enabling some engineers and passive aggressively encouraging others to leave. General morale seems to be quite low, with people putting in just enough to get their paychecks.

They started a mandatory year-end vacation policy, but the vacation days come out of your vacation quota. So if you'd already taken vacation before and running low on vacation balance, prepare to go into negative quota.

    Advice to Management

Engineering teams are quite sufficient, take the management out of the equation, give the teams a chance to have their own process. If necessary, hire agile coaches to lead the process.

Do not discourage engineers with bad reviews/feedback just to avoid promoting them. Employee-employer growth is a two way street. Have 360 degree feedback, so managers are accountable as well.

    Pros

Easy work environment, not much stress.

    Cons

Too relaxed, people don't work hard, people go home early.

    Advice to Management

Letting engineers sit idle kills motivation

I have been working at Oracle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Jobs feel secure. Flexible hours in a casual working environment.
Not bad for a big company

    Cons

In 2013 there were no raises. 90 percent of team left due to integration pains after being acquired. Even though there was no money for raises, Oracle Cambridge managed to find money to pay for lavish going away parties. Even former employees attended and drank on Oracle's dollar. This sure makes current employees feel wanted.

    Advice to Management

Think before you expense something in a year when there are NO raises.

I worked at Oracle full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good for resume. Working at home is fairly easy.

    Cons

Couldn't support the most interesting and innovative projects from this firm they acquired. Lawyers made relationships with customers impossible. Over the course of a year the project and group fell apart.

I worked at Oracle full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Big company resources are at your disposal if you can make a business case to the right person

    Cons

Insular attitude, too much power in the hands of lawyers, not focused on market reality for individual products

    Advice to Management

Buying companies at the peak of their value and preventing them from further innovating is bound to fail at the point that fleeter competitors begin to eat your business out from under you.

  10. "Working at a Really Big Company"

Former Employee - Senior Principal Software Engineer in Cambridge, MA
Former Employee - Senior Principal Software Engineer in Cambridge, MA

    Pros

Oracle is a big company so its compensation and benefits are competitive.
Other than the current exceptional economic climate, working at Oracle should be secure (provided that you do your job, of course).
There may be pockets within Oracle where you can be doing really interesting work.

    Cons

Oracle is a big company so its culture can be a bit cold and stagnant.
My immediate supervisor was one of the main reasons that Oracle was a nice place to work.
You have to put up with a lot of processes, many are questionably useful.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as people and not just numbers on P/L.
