I worked at Oracle full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is doing well. Benefits are great. Salary is competitive in most cases.

    Cons

If you are not in a development group in the core Oracle business or happen to be one of the group result from acquisition, the management may not be very good. I had a personal experience of working in the Oracle VM group and the management was a complete disaster. In my previous group in the core database development, it was fantastic.

I have been working at Oracle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Great location in Nashua NH where you avoid the Boston traffic and the Massachusetts income tax if you live in New Hampshire. Very flexible environment. You can work from home whenever you need to. There's not much stress, at least not in my team. You can move around to other groups if you want to work on something different.

    Cons

Raises are non-existent from my experience. You can go years without a single raise, and if you do get one, it's a very small one. From what I hear, promotions are hard to get also. If you apply for an internal job, it is company policy that you cannot get a raise or a promotion (title change), so all moves within the company are lateral.

Oracle is just not a fun and exciting company to work for. If you are looking for an exciting environment where you can advance in your career, this isn't the place for you. Not many young people work here, and there's a good reason for that. If you are looking for a place that is comfortable and flexible and you value that way more than money, career advancement and a fun culture, this may be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Value your current employees to make it a more exciting place for those who are not just looking to earn a paycheck until they retire.

    Pros

My colleagues are very smart and fun to be around. The work environment is flexible. NH location is easy in terms of traffic and tax-free for NH residents.

    Cons

A very top-down driven company. Sometimes upper management makes decisions without seeming to gather valuable input from their talented worker bees. Groups are spread out all over the world; I would prefer to work with people face-to-face or at least in a similar time zone. Not generous with raises and bonuses.

    Pros

There isn't a ton of pressure.
Deadlines are clear and generally manageable
Very flexible workplace-depending on what group you're in
If you're good at your job, then the stock options and raises are pretty amazing. They pay for talent. People that complain about no raises, no bonus, and no stock are likely doing enough, but not going over and above.

    Cons

At best a middle of the road employee gets 2-3% raises a year.
constantly changing priorities hurt productivity and morale
Good management, but very shiny nickel driven.

    Advice to Management

Pick a path and stay with it. Let product and eng see things through. Things move slow enough that there's time to create change and shift priorities and still close out projects.

    Pros

Initial package is decent. Teammates are smart and hard working. Be able to learn a lot of stuff over years, which should be good once decided to move on

    Cons

Not much pay increases over the years once you are here, even after a promotion. Considering there are always acquisitions, there is some risk of being laid-off. Generally such risks are dependent on the group you are with. Should not be too big a risk.

  9. "An OK place, easy to get lost in the shuffle"

    Pros

    - Lots of smart people.
    - Good overall technology to work with.
    - Good way to get started in business software.
    - Can have good work/life balance if you sacrifice advancement.

    Cons

    - Huge company.
    - Little recognition for positive achievement.
    - Salary falls behind market level over time.
    - Crunch times can be intense and schedules are managed poorly.
    - Little emphasis on continued learning and career development.

    Advice to Management

Start caring about employee happiness again. Treat longtime employees better; it seems the attitude is "go ahead and leave, newbies (who cost less) are waiting to take your place."

    Pros

    Good benefits
Ability to work from home (however, this is at local management discretion)
    Professional culture
Great colleagues to work and collaborate with (although upper management encourages feature competition)

    Cons

    Promotions only for political reasons
Raises few and far between (3 years at last count)
No formal reviews, means management free to do as it pleases with employees fate

    Advice to Management

    Support Oracle internal policies
    Treat individual contributors fairly
Take some people management courses; being a 'good engineer' doesn't qualify you for people management
