I have been working at Oracle full-time

    Pros

Great products with solid IP. Integration story across S/P/IaaS and will take the cloud market, overcoming Amazon and Google.

    Cons

Not a lot of internal promotions, unless there is growth within your specific team area. Translated, if you are tied to a market, like I am, then you will see the team, budgets and personal growth. If you are not, then you don't see a lot of growth. It's easier to leave the org and then get hired back in at a higher salary and title than it is to stay here and accomplish the same thing.

    Advice to Management

I disagree with their concept that good people need to leave the organization. There's a public article out there about this that you can search. I think it was attributed to Larry Ellison. I'd say it's true.

I worked at Oracle full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Sales teams were really great to work with.

    Cons

Regarding culture, many employees feel dispensable and are just a number and some teams were extremely (too) busy while others had manageable work loads. Co-workers were a mixed-bag. Some were great to work with while others not so much.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees and improve the culture, since it's predominately Type A, which can make for unpleasant collaboration at times.

I worked at Oracle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Oracle is a focused, aggressive company. That's good, as long as your division is the object of their obsession, or at least benefits from it. Otherwise, no love at all.

Each major division succeeds or fails on its own merit; there is no sharing of pain. Again, that's good if you're in a group that is on the upswing.

Compensation appears to be on par with competitors.

    Cons

They tend to be a bit myopic, and therefore, late to market on anything not database. Witness their scramble to compete in cloud.

Legalistic and risk-averse to the point of stifling innovation.

Marketing laggard. Brand identity is strong but other forms of marketing (web, SEO, content) are weak, late to market.

LOTS of infrastructure and process. Everything is "self-service". Good luck.

It's clear leadership values employees simply as commodities to generate revenues, rather than valued resources in whom they make investments. Case in point: Layoffs come with no warning, just BOOM - today's your last day. NO chance to seek a transfer to another division in the company.

Oh, and your healthcare benefits terminate at the end of that day, too. (They will pay your COBRA for first 30 days, but that's pretty measly.)

Interpersonal culture can be openly hostile and narcissistic, with no consequences for the bad behavior. Watch your back and don't look for open, honest dialog in search of better solutions or anything vaguely resembling collaboration because those who waste time on 'managing up' tend to win. Oh, and try not to be female; depending on your division, that can be a problem.

    Advice to Management

Executive compensation is an embarrassment - really. Try to bridge the gap between SC, MH, and the rest of the great unwashed.
