I worked at Orange County Register full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good, authentic people work in the trenches. One of the funnest geographic areas to cover in the country. Covers a very wealthy area that includes Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm and a large of array of unique personalities with unique hobbies and interests that make for great storytelling. Great equipment pool for photojournalists.

    Cons

Editors have their favorites. No system to mentor newer photojournalists. At the time I was there they were swung back and forth from focus on print to focus on new media. Probably should've focused on new media. Community journalists have a hard time getting noticed and exposure. Photojournalist have about 4 different bosses on any given assignment and no one fighting for their concerns. Not much leadership in the photo department. Had to work "piece work" (overtime, if available) to make ends meet in OC. Most journalist required to commute from LA county because they couldn't afford to live in county.

    Advice to Management

Photographers are on the frontlines and engage with the largest swath of the community so talking to them as you plan initiatives and such would be to your advantage.

I worked at Orange County Register full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

great coworkers, given a good amount of autonomy, on-campus cafeteria, free water filter machines on every floor

    Cons

No room for promotion or upward mobility, no reviews, no raises in the entire six years I was there, paperwork not handled properly with HR, terrible morale, undervalued by executives in action though praised in words

    Advice to Management

Follow through with promises made to employees, stop being so worried about saving your own jobs that you undercut the employees who report to you

I have been working at Orange County Register full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Efficient employees, kind and helpful. Enjoyed selling the many products available. Created many lasting relationships. The company did the best it could with the limited resources.

    Cons

Limited resources. Newspaper world somewhat volatile. New company purchased OCR and eliminated some of you top talent

I worked at Orange County Register full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The other employees are generallly good people.

    Cons

The company has a lot of great ideas with poor follow through. As a photographer, you seem to have multiple bosses and come review time everyone gets to weigh in on your performance but you don't get to weigh in on the supervisors above you. They also play favorites with assignments; very office politics heavy environment. Supervisors were clueless sometimes about what could make a great story.

    Advice to Management

Let employees especially photographers do annual reviews on their supervisors and reporters they work with.

I have been working at Orange County Register full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people that work there are amazing, like a second family. Freedom's management was great to work for.

    Cons

It is so very sad that the newspaper was run into the ground by previous owners. The industry is consolidating along with ownership changes every few years, make it a very unstable place to work.

    Advice to Management

Advice to current management... you bought it, now make it happen! There are too many talented people working there for you strip and sell.
