I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many great coworkers. Lots of technical challenge and interesting work. Definitely full of opportunity for the younger engineers with ambition and minimal family commitments.

    Cons

As with any place, the politics can be intense and career limiting. The merit increases were scant for years and seemed to be assigned in a very random way. You would be given guidance on how to move up only find the goal post getting moved.

    Pros

Colleagues worked as a team, helped each other out. Engineering support was good. Pretty good atmosphere, goals were achievable. Good work/life balance

    Cons

Promoted people to senior management positions that had no idea about the job, no understanding of what it actually took to get the job done

    Advice to Management

Insure that directors and above are qualified for their positions. Felt like the Peter Principle " was definitely in effect.....

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A multi-talented workforce with many good solutions waiting to be heard from the trenches but mid-level managers and directors filter and change all inputs going to upper levels

    Cons

Management's ears are never open and they penalize those who speak out against crony assignments, directors without proven results, and managers with bad behavior.

    Advice to Management

Look above the grass line and unfog your glasses to recognize truly talented resources and promote them by replacing the directors.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Exciting industry with engaging co-workers. Clean work environment. Not much more to say. It's a job, fairly stable. A chance to use your engineering skills.

    Cons

Pay is low. Benefits for 2016 are very expensive. Training and opportunities to advance are minimal. Middle and upper management is stuffed with people going nowhere. Leads up and comers very little hope for advancement.

    Advice to Management

    Value your employees.

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Can't really think of too many. It was initially nice that everyone had their own office, but then that lost its appeal pretty quickly when you realized there were no windows and the offices were the size of a closet.

    Cons

Slow to get things done due to lots of red tape; management was not supportive in career growth and would not listen to requests about wanting to expand skill set. Very old school style approach from management that did not foster a healthy work environment.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great environment, great work opportunities, great co-workers, and the management is technically competent. Lots of opportunities to work on tough problems.

    Cons

Most of the managers at Orbital are not skilled at management. Orbital adheres to the failed practice of promoting only technically competent engineers to management positions. In addition, most of the engineers they promote to management have a tendency to be arrogant and rude. They make decisions without considering long term effects and impacts to employee morale. Employee suggestions and feedback are not just discarded, but I've seen cases where these are mocked by the managers in front of other employees.

Despite the poor management, the pros of this job exceed the cons. This unfortunately results in very few opportunities for technical advancement.

    Advice to Management

Establish clear expectations and consequences for managers at all levels. Send all managers to management training / interpersonal communication training. If the managers fail to meet the defined expectations, then apply the associated consequences.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The management is very understanding and flexible with your hours. You can work from home in case you have an emergency, especially if you have kids. The starting pay is not bad. Great benefits so far. Friendly people

    Cons

They give you a raise every year but not that much! It's better than nothing!

    Advice to Management

I suggest to hire enough people.

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

When I was offered a position with Orbital Sciences I eagerly accepted it with enthusiasm and motivation. I had followed Orbital as a company for several years and was excited to be granted the opportunity to work for them. Some of the pros of working for Orbital were that the benefits were good and it offered an acceptable work/ life balance. Overall Orbital instilled good company cultural, and the majority of the people/ departments I came in contact with acted with professionalism.

    Cons

The biggest challenge I faced when employed with Orbital was in my own department. Within the first two months of employment it became abundantly clear that my core department was that of an environment of "Good ol' Boys". Despite the distressing atmosphere I made every effort to maintain professional composure while working to the best of my abilities. However, it is very telling when the HR department makes the statement to you, "They are either intimidated by you or they do not like women". Ultimately I left the company because it became obvious that those engaged in the cronyism was not going to change.

    Advice to Management

    1. Take time to evaluate the undertones of your department. Listen with fairness to all of your direct reports, regardless of their level of position. These individuals are in the "environment" and can speak to the environmental makeup.
    2. Understand if the individual you have placed in authority has the leadership skills to fulfill the role.
    3. Show caution and be attuned to the "Good ol' Boys Networks". Such behavior can lead to biasness and potentially cause a department/ company to lose good employees while those that those employees of lesser quality remain.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Venue is in a good part of town, close to freeway and quick access to the 347 freeway for Maricopa. Execs are trying to hold on to reasonable benefits despite changes in health care. If you are expanding your family most of your hospital visit is covered. Orbital ATK merger has a chance of improving the company.

    Cons

Orbital does not invest enough in new technology and leans out the IT staff until it is critically thin. It has much to do with the top management starting at the CIO. You won't get the hardware and software approved by the CIO that you need to create a well performing network and then you will be scorned when it does not perform.
To survive you will need to be really awesome at telling everyone you are awesome. Even then, keep your stills current and resume up to date. Orbital expects every kind of certification before you are hired and then after you get the job do not want to keep you current. If you don't advance yourself and keep your skills current nobody will help you. There is little hope of advancement mainly because once you are hired there is no place to go.

    Advice to Management

Get a new CIO from an outside source before the Orbital ATK merger. The current CIO values bureaucracy and process over people. The current CIO if he gets the "Orbital ATK CIO Job" will turn happy people at ATK with good jobs into a skeleton crew of over worked miserable people. "Orbital ATK" has a chance to be a better company after the merger but if the same wolves run the show, it will be worse and even more impersonal that before. Train people so well that they could work any place they wanted but treat them so well that they would never want to leave.
