I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many great coworkers. Lots of technical challenge and interesting work. Definitely full of opportunity for the younger engineers with ambition and minimal family commitments.

    Cons

As with any place, the politics can be intense and career limiting. The merit increases were scant for years and seemed to be assigned in a very random way. You would be given guidance on how to move up only find the goal post getting moved.

I worked at Orbital Sciences as an intern

    Pros

Very relaxed work environment, worked on my own project, pay was very good for an intern.

    Cons

Was one of many, didn't seem like work was very valuable. Lunch was not free?

    Advice to Management

Interface with interns more, and have them work on useful projects so that they feel valued.

    Pros

Colleagues worked as a team, helped each other out. Engineering support was good. Pretty good atmosphere, goals were achievable. Good work/life balance

    Cons

Promoted people to senior management positions that had no idea about the job, no understanding of what it actually took to get the job done

    Advice to Management

Insure that directors and above are qualified for their positions. Felt like the Peter Principle " was definitely in effect.....

    Cons

Dulles is trying to take over and make everything their way or the highway

    Advice to Management

Let Gilbert Operate how it did before as a small company

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time

    Pros

Overall good experience. Opportunities in different divisions and positions once you get your foot in the door. Decent employee appreciation programs/events

    Cons

As a core engineering company, the finance division plays second rate in many situations. Work is very dependent upon defense policy and industry health.

    Advice to Management

Continue to reward top employees in all divisions. Better to retain the top performers instead of try to keep everyone happy where that is difficult to do.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time

    Pros

Good people to work with and interesting work. Good benefits.

    Cons

Tight schedules often lead to "fire drills" when problems arise and leave little time to trouble shoot and fix, requiring longer hours.

    Pros

    Cons

Not always competitive compensation compared to other companies

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Good pay, lots of different opportunities. Most management is fair.

    Cons

Expects you to work a lot of extra hours, usually unpaid.

    Advice to Management

Give better bonus structure to engineering staff. Paid overtime would be great.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is comprised of highly motivated, highly capable people. Most people work on more than one effort, providing a breadth of challenging work and the opportunity to work with a wider range of people in the company. The climate encourages finding innovative solutions to difficult technical problems.

    Cons

There is some uncertainty as the company works to integrate after the merger with ATK. Management is working to achieve this integration, but it seems that much of this work is behind the scenes and less transparent.

    Advice to Management

As we work through the merger, continue to preserve the strong climate we've had at Orbital and capitalize on the breadth that ATK brings. More transparency would be appreciated, where practical, as the integration proceeds.

Lack of strategic and business planning.
