    Pros

Good salary. OWW has a big and strong technology organization. Lots of challenges to enhance your professional growth. There are career opportunities within the organization. Schedule is very flexible. Very convenient location in downtown Chicago.

    Cons

Too many managers. VPs don't know people in teams and what they are working on. Very rigid procedure for approving technical solutions.

    Advice to Management

    Let employees' ideas compete.

    Pros

Orbitz is such an innovator with so many firsts in the industry. The workforce is very flexible - we have to be - and there are many opportunities to 'make a difference.'

For the most part, upper management is very open to ideas and initiatives from both employees and clients. Many features on the sites are the direct result of client feedback.

The working environment is very modern and there are many amenities both in the office and the building. Transportation couldn't be easier; the Metra depot right downstairs. Non traditional schedules and telecommuting are accommodated wherever possible.

HR practices are enlightened. The benefits offered are average.

    Cons

The fast-moving environment makes internal communications difficult.

There's some uniformity in the workforce (young/techie/urban) that's sometimes bothersome. There was a lot of unnecessary politicking in the recent election.

    Advice to Management

Be very careful in balancing the need for current profitability with the requirements of innovation.

    Pros

They seem to be very employee-friendly. I can work at home or take time of virtually any time I need. Technical managers are all very competent. I think compensation is very fair, benefits above average. Location is excellent, in the same building as the train station.

The company is mostly a java shop but there are pockets of activity in other languages, and management seems very open to suggestions. There are lots of opportunities to learn and try new things.

    Cons

I don't have admin rights to my own workstation, which is a first for me. I think Orbitz is suffering from some poor technical decisions made in the past. There needs to be a bigger focus on teams sharing a common framework for software development. Instead of fixing the standard framework, some teams will simply strike off on their own using different versions of java or creating non-standard build steps to meet their needs.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should work a little harder to foster a culture of individual accountability in the engineering community. Too many software developers push code out without adequate testing prior to the QA cycle. Software needs to be of hire quality before test, rather than waiting for the QA team to find defects.

    Pros

Obitz had a difficult start to 2009. The year started with a CEO transition, a down economy, price competitiion from competitors and a leveraged balance sheet. Wall Street analysts were making dire predictions about the company and the stock was trading below $2/share. However, the company led by its energetic new CEO, Barney Harford, has really turned things around and there is great feeling of momentum. Transaction growth has returned in a strong way, profits are up (despite the elimination of the consumer booking fee), new talent is coming in to the company (and some great old talent has returned), and the company just received a $100 MM infusion of cash signalling great support by seemingly intelligent investors. The company has a strong brand and the momentum has returned.

    Cons

The company still feels to move at a slower pace than I would like. While things have improved in this regard, there is more work to be done and it seems as if steps are being taken to rectify this. It feels as if there is more beaurocracy than an Internet company should have. And there could be a better sense of teamwork - although this should come as the senior team adjusts to the new additions and begins working together better.

    Advice to Management

Keep the momentum going and focus on working together as a unified team.

    Pros

New CEO has re-energized the company and is attracting strong talent to help improve key areas of the company. Smart, dedictaed employees and much less political and bureacratic than other large internet companies I have worked for. Young workforce creates a fun and enjoyable work setting.

    Cons

Like all companies, deciding what to focus on and what opportunities to walk away from is a challenge. Orbitz could use a little more focus.

    Advice to Management

Try to create a little more clarity in terms of overarching company objectives and project priorititzation. But overall I think its a great place to work, espescially in Chicago technology landscape.

    Pros

The passion and dedication that people at Orbitz bring to work every day is not only humbling, but a great motivator - working with such talented people compels me to want to continuously improve. The access to senior leadership at Orbitz is unparalleled. Yes, we're a relatively small company, but the leadership team is completely accessible and is truly interested in your ideas.

    Cons

Sometimes decisions take longer than you might expect in a small company that is trying to hold onto it's entrepreneurial roots. Communication could be a little better, but I have yet to work in a company that has fully mastered effective communication.

    Advice to Management

Remember to periodically get in the trenches with your teams to stay in touch with their day-to-day challenges. Most times, employees just want to know you appreciate their concerns even if you can't solve every problem.

    Pros

The caliber of the team at Orbitz is the best reason to work here. I am constantly impressed by my colleagues and want to raise my game for them. The people care about the company and so they pull together to get work done, but they will also challenge each other to get things done the right way. There is plenty of interesting work to do, so it's important that everyone is on the same page.

The office itself is a fun environment and most managers are flexible with employees. You can work the hours you want, from where you want, as long as you can get your job done. The company provides lots of little perks that make it a nice place to work.

    Cons

There is a lot of work to do and it means that everyone has a lot on their plate. This can make the work/life balance difficult at times. It can also restrict creativity of the team. If there was a way to remove some of this pressure, it would give people more time to find creative solutions or raise new ideas to the leadership team.

    Advice to Management

There are lots of good ideas throughout the company - try to find a way to surface more of them and give people some freedom to pursue them.

    Cons

Things tend to get a bit process heavy sometimes, though not crazy enough to want to jump out of the window... :)

    Advice to Management

Overall good job, a bit more emphasis on technology projects, reduction of technical debt and refactoring would be awesome.
