I worked at Oregon Convention Center

      Pros

Great ED they have for this organization.

      Cons

Nothing bad I can really say about this organization.

I have been working at Oregon Convention Center full-time

      Pros

they really do have potential to do great things and be a better place to work.

      Cons

deep-rooted issues with management. lack of collaboration and communication. no upward mobility. low pay and lean staffing. staggeringly low morale. managers don't know how to manage. lots of folks don't seem to want to be there but they stay because it's easier than leaving.

      Advice to Management

the trouble spots are obvious. you know what to do you're just not doing it. fix the inherent problems and stop taking so long to do every single thing. show that morale and a better mindset matter. do the right thing by your employees and create growth opportunities. since that will take forever to do trying actually paying them what they are worth in the meantime.

I worked at Oregon Convention Center for more than 4 years

      Pros

Nice people, good intentions. I left anyway.

      Cons

Poorly managed, people in positions that don't add value, middle managers are useless, slow movement on just about everything, zero communications across the board, poor planning, no growth for workers, low pay, no benefits for part time people, no PERS or 401k match for full time people, not a safe place to work.

      Advice to Management

Get it together already and stop claiming growing pains. Stop spending money on useless programs and focus more on employees and communication, pay your people fairly and evenly, Metro jobs get higher pay for the same positions, offer career opportunities for your employees, take better care of workers and stop ignoring what they say, get rid of your operations leads, stop taking better care of contractors than you do...

I worked at Oregon Convention Center part-time for more than a year

      Pros

      Above average pay and tips

      Cons

Most unorganized company I have ever worked for, and that’s saying a lot. No communication amongst management towards employees. Not worth the stress the company and management causes.

I worked at Oregon Convention Center full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

Pay is good, benefits are great, co-workers are generally excellent people who mostly have a team mentality. This varies depending on your shift and day of the week.

      Cons

They seem to be phasing out full time event set up staff in favor of a part time heavy model. Not a lot of good communication between sales, event management and departments that actually run the events (A/V, Set-Up, Concessions, Catering, Tech Services, etc.)

      Advice to Management

Consider that you have reached a bottom as to the number of full time staff you can cut in set up. Also consider that some of senior management decisions could be contributing to demoralizing your staff and increasing problems with the metrics that you seem obsessed with (i.e. time loss, sick leave use, FMLA related call ins, injuries, etc.)

      Positive Outlook

I have been working at Oregon Convention Center part-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

      - Big company with consistent work and standard policies / clear expectations - Good team environment - Free access to a multitude of interesting events - lots of variety with new events every few days.

      Cons

      - "The (one) right way" thinking is often encouraged - alternative, good solutions are not always accepted. - Work can be repetitive at times. - New events every few days means the result of your work is always being taken down to make way for the next event. - Occasionally the work can be demanding - physically (heavy equipment) or mentally (stress of running a show or last-minute changes) - Work schedule changes...

      Advice to Management

      - Encourage all good solutions to problems when applicable instead of trying to decide on on the "right way". (Sometimes this makes sense, but not always.) - Encourage employee initiative and free choice, and avoid specific direction when not truly necessary (micro-management).

      Negative Outlook

I worked at Oregon Convention Center part-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

An opportunity to really build a strong teamwork environment, however undermined my toxic managers. A few good people that form the core but most are looking elsewhere

      Cons

Gross mismanagement and especially the night crew is one very unhappy place to be. Turnover is high, morale low and mgrs are clueless. The facility is a cash cow and all about how to wring every dollar out of the place yet employees are a commodity to extract resources from. No wonder so many employees are leaving or looking to leave. And despite their mantra, Its NOT a great place. The HR dept is also openly discriminating...
