The DHS is stifling, stressful and does not care about its employees.

The benefits are good. Some of the other employees are friendly, though many don't hold up their end of the work. It feels good to help many of the clients who come through the doors, though some are crazy and even dangerous. There are positions within the state that are better than others--I was only an HSS1 and then an HSS3 and both those positions were difficult and felt relentless.
Cons
The management is completely top down--they don't respect the employees and treat them poorly. The computer systems are outdated and difficult. The culture is old-school--they pretend to be doing all this cutting edge updating, but basically, the job is a grind and wears people down.

Pros
Benefits are pretty good. The pay is good if you are right out of college.
Cons
The environment is toxic. You regularly work unpaid overtime. Many caseworkers actively dislike their "customers." This is not social work.

Pros
Good benefit package with lots of paid time off. 8 hrs x mo vacation & 8 hrs x mo sick time, plus all the paid holidays & 4 personal days. Yes! 28 days paid per year plus holidays!
Cons
Politics! Inequalities! Nepotism & cronyism. To advance in this agency you must either know someone in leadership or be willing to be a quiet observer. Leadership is not representative of the staff. Disproportionately white male dominated!

Helping those in immediate need. Management has a new priority for training encouraging less job quits. Good Healthcare benefits
Cons
Low salary to start. Unless you've worked the position before, takes significant time to learn.

Room For Improvement
Mar 20, 2023 - Human Services Specialist I in Medford, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Ongoing trainings for staff members. Mental health trainings and support. If you get a good manager, it's a really good job. Medical benefits are really good. Telework option is as fantastic as it is necessary. Vacation/Comp time is good. Strong Union.
Cons
Monthly pay does not a basic living wage even after 4.5 years with the state. COL raises are too small and too infrequent to keep up with the actual rising costs of living. Workload is heavy with no relief in sight. Exposed to daily vicarious trauma from hungry people to severe cases of domestic violence and various kinds of neglect and abuse. Manager may or may not be supportive; there seems to be no minimum standard for management behaviors. A lot of "talk" about RiSE Equity and NorthStar and Diversity, but Administrative management in our District has a long way to go to actually put their money where their mouth is; there is a serious disconnect there. A lot of the Foundations trainings were an absolute waste of time.

Pros
Benefits and time off are pretty good. People in my branches were good to work with.
Cons
The institution does not reach outside for research and methods of how to change or improve their policies or rules. They simply recycle old, internal ideas over and over again.
