I worked at Oregon Judicial Department full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Experience with the law and the legal system. You cannot find a better opportunity to view the legal system before entering practice. The ability to interact with the public, lawyers, and judges is invaluable for your career as an attorney.

    Cons

Low pay. Being a local court, the ability to find jobs outside the area may prove difficult.

I have been working at Oregon Judicial Department

    Pros

Nice co-workers, close to home, great boss, low stress, flexible overtime, time off to attend self funded learning opportunities

    Cons

Lower pay than in private company, old information technology software and hardware, older tools, nepotism, lack of career advancement opportunities

    Advice to Management

Weed out the low performers. Purchase current software and hardware to manage systems remotely. Provide continuing educational opportunities for everyone.

I worked at Oregon Judicial Department full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good people (for the most part), solid benefits, occasionally interesting work. Even though the pay is garbage, they will support you in other ways.

    Cons

Pointless rules and really poor compensation compared to other states. You have to deal with snotty stupid administrative staff, many of whom are know-it-alls despite lacking any college education.

    Advice to Management

They could retain more clerks for the whole term if they paid something close to an entry-level lawyer's salary. Instead, they just get upset when good clerks leave early for law firms.

I have been working at Oregon Judicial Department full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great group of people, depending on the team that you work with. It can be a great place to possibly advance.

    Cons

Because it's a state company there are employees that are not very good and difficult to get rid of. Once someone is there for over a year they might be there for life without trying to improve their craft.

    Advice to Management

There are some people that do really outstanding work that go overlooked because you notice the bad apples more than the people that are great. I know of one person that has basically dedicated his life to the job but he's constantly overlooked.

I have been working at Oregon Judicial Department full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits for the work being done. No real skill required. Easy to get friends and family jobs... assuming you hate them and wish them to share in your misery.

    Cons

Little to no upward mobility. Unmotivated co-workers that are simply there to collect a paycheck until they can retire. Even the most motivated and hard working people eventually have their souls crushed and simply give up and either get lucky enough to find other work or slip away into mediocrity for the rest of their lives. There are two types of management... neither are effective in the slightest. 1: Those... that bury their head in the sand and pretend like problems will just go away. 2: Micro-managers that make their employees lives a living hell.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting imbeciles with no leadership ability. Understand that you don't know as much as you think you do when it pertains to the actual work being performed.

I worked at Oregon Judicial Department full-time

    Pros

Opportunities for advancement since there is a high turn-over of employees.

    Cons

Clique-y and management allows it. Supervisors are n desperate need of people and management skills. It is totally amazing that some of these people were actually hired as managers! Favored employees are allowed to run rampant, shoving work onto others. Pay and benefits are lower than any other government agency, but they will treat you like you should be grateful they allowed you to grace their presence. Morale has... been low for years and, from what I have been told, continues to be very low.
