I have been working at Oregon State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Government work is super rewarding. Oregon State University is a good government job. Also, it's located in Oregon which is a cool place to live.

    Cons

Government work is usually pays less than the analogous private sector job. That is certainly true for my position. It rains a lot in Oregon, which makes it hard to mountain bike.

    Advice to Management

It would be great if you fixed up the break room with with some free food an coffee. Well, actually you do provide donuts, but some alternatives would be nice.

I have been working at Oregon State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great experience and interesting work, I was in an engineering lab as an undergrad assistant. Doing all sorts of industry related projects with companies all over Oregon.

    Cons

The pay is poor, but I guess these jobs are much more about the experience then the pay. Space is very limited and things get cluttered quickly.

    Advice to Management

Make long term commitments to space for certain groups, it is a pain to be moved from building to building on sometimes a months notice.

    Pros

One of the few universities to have land, water, and space grants. Very good organization and academic environment.

    Cons

Not competitive to top tire universities in terms of research.

I have been working at Oregon State University (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits through the Coalition of Graduate Employees. The town and area has excellent opportunities for recreation. Large population of graduate students.

    Cons

Local property owners have no qualms with taking advantage of the student population by charging rent that is more comparable to a metropolitan area than the town of 60,000 that Corvallis is.

I have been working at Oregon State University as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good teaching support, benefits, many teaching opportunities. For large class groups there are many teaching assistants so there are many people to share experiences with

    Cons

Large class sizes for teaching assistants to manage (30+) this is difficult for lab courses. There could be more training on teaching philosophy for TAs

I have been working at Oregon State University full-time

    Pros

I have been GRA for two years at Civil and Construction Engineering department. Students will have higher chance to get jobs at ODOT and other public sectors because most of the projects are funded by ODOT.

    Cons

Sometimes researchers are overloaded with works and their courses, but it really depends on the advisor you are working with.

I worked at Oregon State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I obtained my M.S. degree in Structural Engineering at Oregon State, and was very happy with my education. The Civil Eng. department has many great professors, who take their teaching responsibilities seriously. The labs are also excellent. Compensation was fair.

    Cons

No negatives really. Sometimes the work load is extremely heavy, especially during the first year (when the course load is highest).

    Advice to Management

Work with graduate student union to ensure regular student stipends over the summer. My professor found a work-around, but did so because he was nice, not because he was required to. It was also a bit of a headache.
