  1. "Pay is decent, Silo management between internal departments and a lot of office politics"

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible working and working from home benefits, bonus's can also be good, employees also get company shares if they stay for 2 years Great place to work if you like a 9-5, with frequent breaks and don't like to be challenged.

    Cons

On the surface, Origin looks great with a dedicated HR (people central) working to improve workplace culture, however reality is extremely different. Within and between departments there is a strong presence of internal politics which creates a very observable gap between management and employees. Workplace experience aims to improve engagement between employees, however a majority of managers use this simply as a checkbox to ensure their own KPI's are met, nothing more. Some see it as a chore. Merit, is not necessarily given or acknowledged, at times employees may receive a gift card or certificate of 'good work' during a quarter. Which is a great first step, but really seems to be nothing more than a piece of paper for a photo op. Technical roles especially are easily taken advantaged of via management (a majority of whom have been within Origin for >5 years) , making it extremely rare for promotions regardless of merit or actual contributions.

    Advice to Management

Workplace experience has good intentions, but falls short at delivery as a result of extremely siloed management. Very difficult for management to change their ways, just as a result of the corporate culture unfortunately. Better workplace culture would greatly assist in talent retention.

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible working. No pressure to deliver anything, ever. Great for making money if you're a contractor/supplier, due to total chaos and incompetence.

    Cons

Toxic culture. Incompetent, Machiavellian management. Technically incompetent engineers. Constant organisational change that only results in moving the incompetent people around, whilst all the good people rapidly head to the exit door. Total lack of coherent systems and processes. Actively discriminate against men.

    Advice to Management

Sack every level of management and then resign yourselves. Sell your gas business to someone who knows what they're doing.

I worked at Origin Energy for less than a year

    Pros

    # On-site team was close knit - looked after one another.

    Cons

    # Incompetent middle management # Zero understanding or appreciation of legislative requirements # Preach safety yet cow-boyish behavior when it came to engineering change management and assurance. Schedule was king.

    Advice to Management

Not surprised that you're running into issues with government auditors - you put yourselves in this situation by prioritising schedule over safety. You had some highly experienced contractors working for you and they rang the alarm bells, yet ignored their advice out of arrogance, instead listening to bloated ranks of overpaid incompetent fools covering up their own failures. You reap what you sow.

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good pay, decent bonuses, interesting work, good training, dynamic industry. Good to see the company trying to anticipate the threats from disruptive innovation..

    Cons

Incessant re-structures, bureaucratic, bloated management structure, workforce suffering from change fatigue and damaged morale. The organisational restructures repeatedly take place with politics and power-struggles taking precedence over engagement with the workforce and understanding the actual changes needed. I've endured over 7 different re-structures, and in spite of promises to engage with staff and teams - I've never been approached to discuss our work or what we do. Seems like management only talk to management. Lessons do not get learned and issues do not get exposed nor dealt with. No opportunities to proceed. Management incapable of engaging meaningfully with staff. Unable to have purposeful conversations around career path and opportunities for progression. Immersedin politics. Questionable integrity from some quarters in how decsisions, particularly with the integration of external consultants into the leadership team. Middle management acknowledging that some high-level decisions and motives are questionable and bordering on graft - but unwilling to challenge or escalate issues. Very disappointing and typifies the culture of not being willing to challenge the status quo.

    Advice to Management

Practice the core values. Demonstrate them. Listen. Learn. Care. I have had 4 managers in 15 months. The endless restructures have felt like change for change's sake and have resulted in mini empries and fiefdoms. Senior management out of touch and not engaged with the workforce. Multiple teams working seperately, on the same thing...duplication and nonsense permeates the organisation. The skills and qualities of the workforce are not being tapped. Need to create more opportunities for people. Stop using hackneyed buzzwords - and start really embracing those ideals: Lean, Agile, Engagement. Nothing worse than hollow empty vacuous statements from the C Suite team. Very disappointing with how

    Pros

Decent pay Flexible work hours if you don't compromise deliverables

    Cons

Doesn't promote innovation Management do not listen to the advice of the technical experts that they hire If you stick your neck out to address or escalate an issue, they will chop it off Their culture and initiatives are a shroud to help mask their shady practices Doesn't care about individual employees Withholds information crucial to your career No progression opportunities No forethought into change management Ancient technology stack Management have big heads but no skills Management not armed with skills required to keep staff happy High stress environment The technical management extremely under skilled Top level contractors are assigned the work suitable for a jr. developer Bad for anyone that cares about keeping their resume in good shape for the next role Introduces legacy, outdated and vulnerable frameworks and sells it to stakeholders as bleeding edge

    Advice to Management

If you keep throwing people under the bus when they are willing to put themselves out there to address issues within the company, then all you will be left with is sheep and unqualified egomaniacs. Be prepared to rebuild your team from scratch for the third time in a year.

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Overall Origin Energy had good benefits, interesting work and good networking opportunities. The company provided good training opportunities and took on board requests in regards to what training they would like access too.

    Cons

Sometimes simple procedures required excessive paperwork. There was a severe lack of IT help available and accessible within the company with no change at all over my time in the organisation, if anything it got worse.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the current IT structure, reduce paperwork on the easy procedures where possible.
