I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Intelligent people, good corporate culture, great benefits.

    Cons

Over staffed in Finance which has developed into a pedantic, perfectionist culture. Can take a long time to get simple things finished. Also career progression tends to be slow.

    Advice to Management

Improve your performance management system and develop succession planning.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Rewarding for the initial one to two years. Then you realize how many senior people are incompetent at their jobs.

    Cons

If you are after a long-term career don't go to Origin. The exception is if you have a big ego, use bullying tactics leaving no fingerprints, and have no leadership abilities. The place seems to be professional, hardworking etc. Underneath the table though, for the worst of managers, strategies to increase bonus, promotion, without earning it. Sydney and Melbourne offices are overstaffed and overpaid. A hierarchical structure exists, exacerbating the nightmare as incompetent managers keep information to themselves even if it is relevant to you. Will stick it to you that you are low life. Upper management doesn't care. This is the case even when large amounts of money is wasted. Hard work and making positive changes to the organisation will not get you promoted. More likely to be punished/plagerised/ignored, as manager takes the reward.

These problems require more effort than putting posters on walls.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Origin Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people who are intelligent and approachable The company has good intent in their compass Ethics and value of people receive high praise Good remuneration

    Cons

Executive team not effective at managing risky options without eroding benefits Poor decisions betting too much of the company on single changes that made bad assumptions When times get tough (financially) the code of ethics and values become rubbery

    Advice to Management

Executives struggle to extract maximum value from their teams through poor leadership. Focus on the value people can bring, rather than the short term vision that requires turnover of staff. I hope the company endures until the next leadership team can take over.

work arrangements not overly flexible, minimal focus on 360 degree reviews (plenty of attention though to reviews downwards!), high focus on powerpoint, work-life balance can be a stretch at times (many ex bankers)

    Advice to Management

360 reviews would be a positive inclusion
