I have been working at Orrick (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Finding it challenging to identify pros. Benefits are good and offices are well appointed. The lawyers are smart as are most of the staff.

    Cons

Terrible leadership team. Incredibly political with next to zero emotional intelligence. No CFO, CMO, or Chief HR Officer, if that's an indication. Lawyers are paid at market prices, but staff positions seem under market, especially for the number of hours staff members are expected to work. Strategic vision not well articulated--the vision that is articulated is not backed with a well thought out plan. Firm touts its core values, but seems to reward those who don't practice them. Morale is low.

    Advice to Management

Bring in leaders with emotional intelligence who can articulate a plan and motivate staff to execute.

    Pros

The staff and associates are friendly. Management is oblivious to the concerns of the staff.

    Cons

The review process is terrible, and lacks structure. Things brought up in your review that had nothing to do with proformance.

    Advice to Management

They are going to do what is best for their bottom line, regardless!

I have been working at Orrick full-time

    Pros

Good PTO and benefits. Good pay.

    Cons

The firm currently has a ration of 6 attorneys per secretary. You work really hard and there is no toleration of less than perfect work. Attorney's don't communicate well with secretaries. There is definitely a us vs. them attitude with staff.

    Pros

    Good food and nice office.

    Cons

Long and grueling hours. Paralegals treated as second class. Career advancement is very limited. No support from management.

    Advice to Management

Treat paralegals as valued employees because they are!

    Pros

Great work! The firm has excellent health benefits and retirement plan.

    Cons

The firm is cliquish. When they decide to purge they don't care about the truth. They can also be elitists.

I have been working at Orrick as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of great fellow employees to be miserable with.
Opportunity to earn extra money with overtime.
    Required 30 minute lunch break.

    Cons

Overtime wasn't 'required' but it was sort of required to secure your place on another project.
No incentive to work harder than the person next to you.
Several secret "projects" and pay raises, but you weren't told how you could qualify for one yourself.

    Advice to Management

    Offer incentive to work harder.
Be less obvious about who is the teacher's pet.
