More Pros and Cons

  1. "Orrick Senior Associate"

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

It's a good salary, it's a big firm, there's decent flexibility, lots of different practice areas and lots of different offices.

    Cons

It's not the most profitable firm in the world, and there are a lot of jerk partners - although that may be common to a lot of different firms in New York.

    Advice to Management

Try and focus more on cultivating partners who actually care about associates and are nice human beings.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Culture is generally great at the top level; try to be reasonable about work-life balance for big law.

    Cons

Very hit or miss depending on which partners you work for; some departments can get really slow.

  3. "Orrrick Best Law Firm"

I have been working at Orrick full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Orrick is very employee centric. What I mean is that they do things to make their employees feel as though they care about their well being with staff appreciation days, a soft ball team, mentoring.

    Cons

In my case, there hasn't been enough training.

    Advice to Management

Have a more comprehensive training function.

I have been working at Orrick (More than a year)

    Pros

Great compensation and benefits; smart people; one of the top firms in the startup space.

    Cons

Like all big firms, long hours are required; people generally just want to get done and go home; clients tend to be very cost conscious in the startup practice, which leads to a lot of pressure to do things quickly and perfectly, but without billing much time.

    Advice to Management

Work on creating better office culture to keep employees happier given the demands.

    Pros

Good work-life balance, free parking, flexible hours and scheduling, and a relaxed, low stress atmosphere.

    Cons

Poorly managed from the top, relatively low pay, and the team leads are hit or miss in terms of competence and personality.

    Advice to Management

Half the leads and the director (a time server from a fifth rate school) could probably be fired today with an uptick in quality.

I worked at Orrick (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people and many excellent lawyers. Competitive salaries and good benefits.

    Cons

The firm seems to have lost pace compared to other law firms its size. For years the former chairperson said that there was going to be a consolidation of a handful of elite, global law firms - like the accounting companies. But Orrick was never able to crack into that top level and has drifted downward.
