I have been working at Orrick full-time

    Pros

I mainly work independently. There is no one looking over my shoulder and I have the flexibility to complete my tasks as I see fit.

    Cons

They are a very liberal company and are proud to push liberal causes. They have very strict policies set in place that govern departments as a whole and often do not fit a specific situation or person.

    Advice to Management

Give managers and workers more freedom to handle situations and people as they feel is best. When making company wide decisions pull lower level people into focus groups to understand how decisions effect different positions.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Collaborative environment
    Excellent substantive opportunities
    Early responsibility
Reasonable work-life balance for big law
    No screamers
    Interesting and complicated cases

    Cons

Difficult to establish mentoring relationships for non-traditional associates
Numerous lateral hires make for a patchy office culture at times
No partner buy-in for supposed firm initiatives (e.g. diversity initiatives, associate initiatives)

    Advice to Management

I think the real issue is lack of partner buy-in for supposed firm priorities. For example, there are tons of associate committees and affiliate committees and such, but there is little to no partner involvement so it feels like a lot of lip service to supposed firm culture without any actual impact. That said, the firm has identified good priorities and initiatives, it's just failing to execute at the moment.

I have been working at Orrick as a contractor

    Pros

The people, the culture and the opportunity to work on different projects. This is mainly attributed to my manager. She is amazing.

    Cons

Contract not long enough to determine.

    Pros

Absolutely stellar work environment. The staff is first-class and the attorneys are (mostly) friendly. This firm is a rarity among AmLaw 100 firms.

    Cons

It is still an AmLaw 100 firm. The business model itself is a tough one.

    Advice to Management

Management is outstanding and there isn't a lot of glory-hounding. Senior management is very good at recognizing the contribution of team members at all levels.

I have been working at Orrick full-time

    Pros

Recognized as one of Fortune's 100 Best Places to Work - and it is! Orrick truly cares about its employees and employee welfare is an important factor when they make decisions. The benefits are great, paid time off is extremely generous. The implement many programs that are designed to help employees focus on their health and well being. 401(k) contribution. Decent bonuses. CEO is fully engaged. Town Hall meetings several times a year keep employees informed - very transparent. Orrick has strong core values that they embrace - it isn't just talk.

    Cons

The attorney to secretary ratios are pretty steep, but this is balanced out by outsourced support systems.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at Orrick (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart, capable employees who worked hard consitently throughout the firm. The legal work is interesting and the firm has a great, long-standing reputation.

    Cons

Sometimes difficult to feel connected to others in various offices since, for a staff members, there aren't many opportunities to interact.

    Advice to Management

I don't really have any advice to the management since its been several years since I worked there and am not familiar with new leadership.
