I worked at Orrick full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits offered are above average.

    Cons

Pay tends to be on the lower end of the spectrum and management is hit or miss.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that department level management actually understands the work their employees do.

I worked at Orrick full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Clients are doing cool stuff.

    * On the corporate side at least, Orrick cares a lot more about getting the details right than some other firms I've worked with. There are smart people there you can learn a lot from.

    Cons

    * Very hit or miss depending on which partner you do the most work for. A lot of the partners are smart lawyers but not very good managers.

    * There are smart people there you can learn a lot from, but it's up to you to actually learn from them.

    * Benefits were sort of meh from a pricing perspective. Unlimited vacation is nice in theory but not great in practice.

    Advice to Management

Improve training. Let it count towards the hours targets.

    Pros

Good benefits and PTO. Positive working environment. Great attorneys.

    Cons

Unpredictable work hours. That said, this is the norm in big law.

I have been working at Orrick full-time

    Pros

best culture as far as biglaw goes, helpful staff and associates.

    Cons

very busy practice, the firm is doing well so everyone has a ton on their plate (can be a con)

    Advice to Management

increase burden of mentoring on partners and decrease that burden on associates.

  6. "Orrick Senior Associate"

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

It's a good salary, it's a big firm, there's decent flexibility, lots of different practice areas and lots of different offices.

    Cons

It's not the most profitable firm in the world, and there are a lot of jerk partners - although that may be common to a lot of different firms in New York.

    Advice to Management

Try and focus more on cultivating partners who actually care about associates and are nice human beings.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Orrick is very employee centric. What I mean is that they do things to make their employees feel as though they care about their well being with staff appreciation days, a soft ball team, mentoring.

    Cons

In my case, there hasn't been enough training.

    Advice to Management

Have a more comprehensive training function.

    Pros

Culture is generally great at the top level; try to be reasonable about work-life balance for big law.

    Cons

I worked at Orrick full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People were friendly and the work was interesting. A lot of opportunities to work on interesting documents. The benefits are good and offer opportunities to spend time with family especially after having a child.

    Cons

Management was poor. Direct manager acted unethically and requested questionable actions. Same manager was also incredibly rude and expected one to work off the clock without pay.
