I worked at Orvis Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great location. Good comraderie with coworkers. Clear vision, goals, and worker expectations. A family run business that rewards its employees based on objective measures rather than subjective opinions. Lots of opportunities to move up within the company. Employee expectations are reasonable. Salary is competitive.

    Cons

Being a family run business low tier employees often have direct contact with the owners and upper management. While this can be an advantage it is often a disadvantage if mid-managers do not communicate goals, expectations and vision well. A good employee can suffer some hardships if his supervisor is weak or doesn't communicate well. The system can break down, etc.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on imparting vision to your employees and train your management staff how to communicate vision, goals, and positive reinforcement to employees. Orvis does well at this although some mid-managers in the past did not have good people skills.

    Pros

Family atmosphere, enjoyable work, compensation is competitive, discount on all products

    Cons

selling high priced items, difficult customers

    Advice to Management

Management in my opinion was great the entire time I was with the company. Managers seem to stay with the company for a fair amount of time.

    Pros

Great working environment in terms of company culture.
Very open door even at the C Level, and the CEO is also the owner so he truly cares about the company.
Corporate culture is relaxed, Jeans every day if you like, button downs or polo's with no ties.
Time for salaried employees is usually very flexible, working from home is somewhat common but not widespread, this really depends on your direct reporting manager.

    Cons

Lack of Standardization across systems and departments, an aging infrastructure and some under-staffing ins specific areas leads to a slightly unorganized system.
Compensation is low retaliative to other companies, particularly in surrounding cities like Albany or Boston, but cost of living is also lower.
Health insurance is not great, particularly after the recent reform, if given the option a spouses plan may be a better option.

    Advice to Management

Organization seems top heavy at times, a huge number of VP's, Directors, Managers, Supervisors etc... from the bottom looking up it seems like there are more people managing the workers than there are workers. Decrease the number of management levels and use the free'ed up capital to pay additional staff.

    Pros

Great company to work for. Excellent benefits. This company says it treats you like family and it truly does.

    Cons

You have to really love working in a remote area. Their campus is stunning but takes a certain person to work in Vermont. Not ideal for someone who is a "city type".

    Advice to Management

Honestly no advice. You treat you employees with respect and truly create a great place to work.

I have been working at Orvis Company part-time

    Pros

The E-Commerce has been great. Flexible hours, good pay, and good people. Challenging work that uses my customer service and technology skills. The newest supervisor Juliana is wonderful; she truly makes it a priority to help everyone be the best that they can be. There is potential to work from home too.

    Cons

Working at least one weekend day is required of everyone. There is a lot to learn in a short period of time, so this is tough but will be rewarding.

    Advice to Management

Continue to take time to focus on making everyone better, not just a select few.
