I have been working at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Being casual, I jump from school to school, and all the staff I've met have been great and welcoming!

    Cons

Would love to have full time work in the school board as an EA.

    Advice to Management

None, I have not had a problem with management.

I have been working at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board full-time

    Pros

The board offers excellent PD Opportunities.

    Cons

Mismanages its money immensely compared to the other 3 school boards in Ottawa. Teachers are terribly lacking in resources and are constantly forced to spend their own money.

I worked at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a pretty good school board. Teachers are quite helpful and helped me succeed. I would recommend going there.

    Cons

There was a lot of homework. Maybe it was partly because I was in the International Baccalaureate program at Colonel By.

    Advice to Management

Give less homework. Some schools are starting to fall apart with old infrastructure and equipment. Needs new stuff.

I worked at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Plenty of potential for growth through professional development days, workshops, training, mentoring, etc.
Friendly coworkers, for the most part, who were more than willing to help new teachers.

    Cons

It is very difficult to obtain a permanent position.
    Administration changes every 3-5 years.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be new ways of attracting and keeping good teachers, preventing them from leaving due to lack of permanent work.
Maternity leave benefits should be provided to occasional teachers (assuming they work full-time hours).

    Pros

Good benefits, salary, and summers off.

    Cons

Poor inservice training, student/classroom based funding, poor support for extra-curriculars, little incentive for teachers to go above and beyond the call, insufficient time for planning and evaluation.

    Advice to Management

Look for ways to reward those that go above and beyond the call, provide teachers with the time they need to do the job, be sure to support the efforts of staff in and out of the classroom.

    Advice to Management
