I worked at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved the job responsibilities. There was a set flow so I always knew what was to be expected once I got within the swing of things. There was 2 weeks of training before I was left alone, which was nice, and they even wanted to train me longer but I declined.

    Cons

There were always schedules that were not filled so you had to stay after your shift ended. Sometimes they wanted me to work doubles when I had school the next day, but would always find someone to cover me so I could go home eventually.

    Advice to Management

Scheduling could be better- better communication.

    Coworkers usually exhibited great teamwork.

    Cons

Low pay, little teamwork from management, low staff at all times.

    Advice to Management

Help out your nurses of they are drowning in work.

I have been working at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a very relaxed environment, and everyone is very friendly. The setting isn't so much of 'nursing home' but feels like it is their actual home so you definitely get to know your elders very well.

    Cons

Since it is a laid back environment employees get away with a lot of things that they shouldn't get away with. Also the pay is by experience, which sucks that it doesn't matter if you work harder than someone else. Again, management doesn't listen very well to the needs of the aides.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your staff is telling you about your employees. We are working with them on the floor and you guys are not.

    Pros

    Fantastic management learning experience
Large company with opportunities to grow
Lots of creative freedom as a chef

    Cons

Upper management can be secretive and condisending at times
Long hours and long days as a manager

    Advice to Management

    Be as transparent as possible
Never sacrifice resident care and happiness to try and save money
Retaining good employees is just as important as hiring good employees
Just because someone is good at their job doesn't mean you can depend on them for everything

    Pros

Free meals, residents and their families

    Cons

Lazy, unprofessional co-workers causing too much drama and full of lies, rumors and gossips; poor management

    Advice to Management

Do not be too lenient and hire responsible, willing to be held accountable and eager to learn individuals. Hard working and committed employees will continually leave because of their lazy and unprofessional partners.

I worked at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They serve excellent food to all of the residents. There seemed to be a lot of extra activities and trips for the residents to participate in. They typically do a large Christmas program that includes the residents participation.

    Cons

They are not flexible with an employees hours at all. I worked Monday through Friday and was not permitted at all to take a day off, even with notice. I could not accumulate sick time or vacation time, nor could I take a day off without pay. If I did take a day off, which I was forced to because my son was ill, I even had a doctor's note, I was wrote up for each day I was off and accumulated points. Whether I was ill or not, I ALWAYS went to work. That is how I was brought up.

    Advice to Management

There is such a big turn over rate at the community I worked. I have worked for the past 30 years of my life and have never worked at such a non-flexible place of employment. I always received excellent reviews for my work and performance, yet no matter how much notice I would give I was not permitted to take one day off without getting written up.
