    Negative Outlook

I worked at Our Sunday Visitor full-time

    Pros

Amazing benefits, low-cost insurance, an on-site free clinic (saved so much money using that), an employee credit union that's flexible and helpful (helped us climb out of debt). And for the longest time, a forward thinking company, they knew that they couldn't sustain themselves on simple offertory envelopes so looked to expand into digital giving and other technology that would keep them relevant into the modern era.

    Cons

Sadly, despite all those pros, this organization is hobbled by one huge problem. Poor management. Throughout the organization you'll find people that have been promoted to managerial roles that have no business nor experience in managing others. And their subordinates suffer as a result. So many departments in that organization are a revolving door as staff get fed up and abandon ship. Couple those pathetic managers with a political environment that's just toxic and you've got a recipe for disaster. Those very same managers that are incapable of being proper managers both manage upwards, so they look good to their own managers, as well as walk all over the service departments anytime they please. Think maintenance, human resources, or information technology. These ineffective managers take advantage of these other departments to get whatever it is they want, regardless of the effect it has on the organization. And a precedence has been set by the leaders that this behavior is okay so the departments are powerless to combat it.

    Advice to Management

With very few exceptions, consider cleaning house of your upper management. Start believing what the bottom of the totem pole is saying about their managers and do something about it. Take away these positions power to manipulate the service departments. This organization is at risk of collapsing under its own weight due to ineffective managers.

The last time Our Sunday Visitor was awarded "Best Place to Work" was 2008. Have any of you given any consideration as to why you haven't seen that since?

I worked at Our Sunday Visitor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits including credit union and on-site clinic. The people that do the work are awesome - I've fostered some lifelong friendships from working there.

    Cons

Poor management with lots of politics... If you don't play the game, then good luck!

    Advice to Management

Management likes to think they are into employee engagement but when sharing your concerns or thoughts turns into a backlash, employees begin to distrust. Do what you say you're going to do!

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Our Sunday Visitor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Offers insurance options at a low cost, 401K matching starting at 30 day, decent paid time off and leave policies.

    Cons

Little room for upward movement and promotions based on politics and favor, not on work and fit for the position. Was seeing many long and short term employees leaving due to disgust with upper management and under handed moves. Beware!

    Advice to Management

If you talk about be transparent, then at least attempt to be transparent. You are creating a culture of distrust.

I worked at Our Sunday Visitor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You'll find some great people working here regardless. Generally, there are open positions because of so many people quitting.

    Cons

They like to constantly laude that they are a great place for employees without actually providing any real good or unique benefits. If you're a great place to work, you shouldn't have to tell your employees that.
