I worked at Outerwall (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Prior to the implosion in late 2014 with massive layoffs followed by more layoffs after I voluntarily left, the pay, bonuses, and benefits were all great. Work environment was mostly good until then. Management was all over the board - some bad and some good.

    Cons

Company imploded, new lines of business were cancelled, big layoff followed by smaller ones, company was taken over by private equity organization.

I worked at Outerwall full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, decent pay and for a long time job stability.

    Cons

No longer any job stability throughout the company. Many people laid off over the last few years. The site where I worked closed down completely with 1 weeks notice.

    Advice to Management

Since the company went from public to private the company seems to lost it's way and focus solely on the bottom line and not on it's people who made it a great company to begin with. I would suggest trying to find some middle ground before you lose all of your tribal knowledge, culture, and talent.

I worked at Outerwall full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fully vested 401k from day one, in the early days employees were valued, bonus plan, annual raises, good vacation package

    Cons

Once the original managers left employees lost retention "bonuses", current managers have zero experience with the equipment, managers encourage employees to work extra unpaid hours, employees punished for taking vacation time but told they'd lose vacation time if they didn't use it, unrealistic project timelines, bullying tactics by mangers

    Advice to Management

Listen to your experienced employees. Stop bullying your employees

    I worked at Outerwall full-time

    Pros

Overall, the people at Outerwall were great to work with - friendly, supportive, collaborative, dedicated.

    Cons

Management could not decide on a compelling long-term strategy, and were more focused on current operational efficiency. They also did not seem to have much appreciation for marketing or technology. Again, mostly a financial and operational focus. As a result, the company sold off to private equity and broke up into 3 separate entities.

    Pros

Great opportunity to work across several lines of business: Redbox, Coinstar, ecoATM and SampleIT with varying degrees of data and organizational structure and maturity which was great exposure and opportunity to work at both a startup and a mature organization at the same time

    Cons

    Pros

Good, smart people to work with - many of whom have worked there for 10 + years. Folks are committed to each other and the company.

    Cons

Company split off and shut down work on new technologies and is now down to just keeping the cash flow going from existing business types.

    Advice to Management

Focus on innovation if you want to keep the best people. Need to do something that makes it interesting to work there again.
