I have been working at Ovum full-time

    Pros

Job involves covering a 'hot' industry, some very bright and knowledgeable colleagues, premier clients, flexible working possible in terms of location, managers who do not micro-manage and good benefits

    Cons

Lower end of salary especially for those that have been here for a while, lack of communication and motivation

    Advice to Management

Figure out better ways for company to communicate and collaborate among colleagues, not just up and down the ranks

    I worked at Ovum full-time

    Pros

You can work from home and have flexible hours (kinda)

    Cons

Gee - where to start - a total boys club. If you don't are female your male counterparts expect you to be the team admin and secretary. Totally disorganized - absent management and a void of real leadership.

    Advice to Management

Try to modernize - I know you think you can predict the future as an analyst firm, but your policies and mindset is truly rooted in the past.

"Loved what I did but couldn't continue to sell more YoY, get paid less, with little resources."

I worked at Ovum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Credible analyst firm, strong international brand outside of NA region, smart and very well known/respected analysts, all of the people I worked with we're great, they'll truly be missed.

    Cons

    1) Completely un-incentivized to sell, the annual sales quota is increased YoY but every year there is a new tweak to the commission plan allowing management to find different/new ways to pay out less commission to their sales reps. No matter what is sold if a rep doesn't hit 75% of their quarterly target then they get paid zero, and if they achieve 75%-99.9% of their quarterly quota, they'll get paid 3%. At 100% of quota you get paid 8%.

2). There is no marketing at all and all sales & marketing collateral is created by sales reps. No efforts to promote the Ovum brand, to generate news and raise awareness,...etc. There is nothing.

3). Analysts are stretched so thin they turn down work nearly half of the time.

4). Zero North American brand presence/awareness, most companies do not know who Ovum is, nor have they ever heard of Ovum's name as a global market research/analyst firm.

5). The biggest con which has a huge impact on many other issues/challenges, is the fact that Ovum is a global analyst firm and they don't know who they are, no clear identity or specific value-proposition differentiating Ovum from its competitors. Nobody can clearly articulate Ovum's value proposition or how they differentiate from competitors.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the voices of your sales reps, analysts,...etc across all regions. A lot of valuable insight could be received when engaging more closely with non-management employees.
You have to make changes, first starting with Marketing.

  4. "Account Manager"

I have been working at Ovum full-time

    Pros

    good people, plenty of autonomy

    Cons

compensation plan changes every year, constant restructuring from above, too much attrition with analysts

    Advice to Management

Management focuses on other parts of the Informa business such as the pharma products. Either invest into the other logos, or sell them off.

  5. "Ovum hampered by parent company Informa, which doesn't really want to be in the research business"

    I worked at Ovum full-time

    Pros

Great analysts and editorial staff--really driven, experienced, capable people.
Interesting, challenging work for consultants/analysts, and lots of opportunity for industry exposure.
Flexible working conditions--many people work at home.

    Cons

Informa management doesn't really understand the research business, and consequently is driving it into the ground.
Compensation for top analysts not keeping pace with other industry employment options.
Sales force strategy is a mess--management keeps hiring, firing, and losing the wrong people and destabilizing customer interactions, making it hard to analysts/consultants to develop business.

    Advice to Management

Either be in the research business to win or get out. You can't raise the top line by cost-cutting: You need an actual top down business strategy and a plan to achieve it. In terms of personnel, be prepared to pay for quality and morale.

    Pros

    Experienced and friendly colleagues
    Interesting work

    Cons

Some in sales team and senior analysts not pulling weight
Parts of corporate strategy not working properly
    No pay raises for years

    Advice to Management

    Hire better salespeople
    Pay better

I worked at Ovum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility
    Casual Dress Environment
    Open Office Plan
Every "Monday" holiday off (MLK Day, Labor Day, etc)

    Cons

    Parent Company treats employees poorly.
Different compensation for European Employees vs US Employees. European Employees receive better vacation package.

    Advice to Management

My experience at Ovum was great. However, the parent company treated employees poorly. They also didn't understand the product and the customer expectations. They attempted to change the delivery of the research to fit their model which the customers did not like. They did lose business in the process

    Pros

Very helpful and nice culture and excellent colleagues, get to meet very influential people from most top tier software vendors and also as intellectually challenging work as want to make it.

    Cons

An excellent place for someone with plenty of experience but not that great for juniors as company does not have a structured training programme.

    Pros

Nice team, flexible working, some brilliant analysts.

    Cons

'Big hitters' bought in from the US who didn't have a clue about management and expected you to work all-hours.

    Advice to Management

Have a clear direction, and clear roles and responsibilities, especially with Informa group. Hire managers with proper people management skills.
