I have been working at Owens Corning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of hours if your looking for that, regular employee's are good honest people and easy to talk to.

    Cons

Very little support, poor coomunication and terrible safety culture, would rather hide issues than adress them, work schedule changes when your off.

    Advice to Management

The good old boy system isn't working any more might want to think about a different approach

I worked at Owens Corning full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great corporate headquarters campus on the river in downtown Toledo. Great local restaurants plenty of activities outside of the building. Experience interfacing with some of the better technologies such as SAP and Cisco.

    Cons

Heavy dependence on outside contractors will lead to lack of internal knowledge. Long-term employees are not open to change. Frequent outages at the plants. Control freaks at the Director level. Employee development is lip service. Quarterly reviews are excessive and I doubt HR reads the content. HR puts too much emphasis on feedback from other leaders in deciding where you go in your career path (tick someone off and you've had it!). Mentor program is a joke! Meetings consume 85% of your time!

    Advice to Management

Cast a wider net for Senior Leaders and put a program in place where they don't get sucked into the OC Culture. And speaking of culture, the meetings should be limited to 15 minutes and attendees should be required to stand - NOT SLEEP, read emails, or shop online!

I worked at Owens Corning full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees - especially those that have been with the company through the bankruptcy etc. are fantastic people to work with. Likewise the longer tenured managers are decent to work for as well.

    Cons

Younger/outside leadership is way,way too focused on metrics! Throughput and cycle time are fine measurements for machines - but not for people! Younger management in most instances had no "people skills". Hard to stay engaged in the position I had considering 99% of the analysis I did had no impact on the decision that was made. Too many stupid rules regarding health, safety and environment, did not believe in empowerment - as a result it was more like a daycare center than a place of employment.

    Advice to Management

Drop the quarterly employee reviews, treat employees like people, have leadership that doesn't get hot and bothered over measurables at the expense of treating their co-workers decently, Ask the older employees how things were when OC was among the top places in town to work at instead of what it is now, and for gosh sake treat the employees like adults!

    Pros

High Pay, offset by having to follow union rules instead of company policy

    Cons

Long hours, breaks that are cut by need to keep equipment working, preferential treatment of others who are liked.

    Pros

Early rotational development programs one of the best programs around for new starters.

Good branding and product awareness at key channels

Commitment to safety is truly integrated everywhere

    Cons

High turnover, especially in middle management in Toledo.

Directors and above great at passing the buck. There are some directors/VPs there who play blame game well, make sure you get the real scoop before hiring in under them.

Health benefits the lowest I've ever seen

OC axes middle management regularly... even when businesses are doing well. Major org structure changes every year, no stability.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 'great power point presentation' equals great results culture. It teaches everyone that form is more important than substance.

    Pros

Almost endless overtime if you are hourly.
    Big on safety.

    Cons

Hot, nasty, smelly, endless work hours, rotating 12 hour shifts. If you are salary you just get to work lots of extra hours.

    Advice to Management

I didn't see any leadership there, just lots of confused over worked people.
