I worked at Owens & Minor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some nice ppl left, but most are searching for another job because the company has changed so much and become a very negative place to work. Our current CEO doesn't know anything about the business and is not respected or liked. He has made many bad decisions and is not a people person, like Mr. Minor or Craig Smith. All he cares about is the bottom line and flying back and forth to his hometown of Chicago. He never moved to Richmond.

    Cons

Very negative, toxic work environment at corporate HDQ, based on lack of compassion and appreciation from CEO and his cronies who are ruining the company that Mr. Minor and his family built and was beloved by so many for so long. Very sad.

    Advice to Management

Stop laying off, demoting and not promoting your valuable employees. Get rid of McKinsey - they don't know the company as well as your own employees and are ruining our culture.
Value your people and practice what you preach! Current CEO and management are not respected or liked and ppl are leaving in droves.

I have been working at Owens & Minor full-time

    Pros

Still some talent to save company

    Cons

Senior management and consultants are taking Company down

    Advice to Management

Advice to Board is to remove CEO, Chairman, and all the consultants destroying your Company. The "Vision" is extremely flawed., demonstrated by stock prices down at new lows. The Company is worth less than half when current CEO was hired. Change immediately or risk lower values.

I have been working at Owens & Minor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    LOTS and LOTS of overtime.

    Cons

LOTS of overtime. Incompetent management. No raises because the managers are too lazy to do your yearly review. Don't bother working your butt off because you will never get promoted. No matter how much experience you have, management will just be lazy and give a promotion to anyone they like, no matter how incompetent the person is.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together. Stop promoting people with no leadership skills and are lazy. Hire more people so we don't have to work 12 plus hours every single day. Don't reward us with dinner that you cooked, only to have raw hot dogs and hamburgers. Stop sitting around talking. Communicate more. If you say you're going to do something, do it. Your workers are at their wits end and about to go on strike.

I worked at Owens & Minor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This used to be a nice place but NO more. But there are a few nice people left in the organization but very few. All depends on your department.

    Cons

Teammates that are slackers and incompetent are paid high salaries and those that work hard are always at the bottom of the pay scale. Even after the recent layoff, there are plenty of lazy people still around and of course they are the ones with the worst attitudes. And lets not forget that the company is extremely TOP heavy. Had a layoff and at the same time hire several new VPs. For what?

    Advice to Management

Get a new CEO! Actually get one this time with some brains. He is the absolute worst! The board of directors should be ashamed!

    Pros

Good friendly teamwork inspired atmosphere. Good hours. No weekends unless it's an emergency.

    Cons

Being overworked for non competitive pay.
Everyone is not treated equally for equal tasks and work.
    Clueless management.
Business as usual environment. You are put wherever you're needed whenever they want at times.
The hardest workers and departments make less money.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent to the "little people".
Give back to your workers every now and then. Show them you care.
    Do more thorough background checks.

I have been working at Owens & Minor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are some very good people at the company. Unfortunately, they are fewer and fewer as the old culture left behind by Gil is over run by consultants. Work/life balance is good - this is not a Face time culture.

    Cons

'New' CEO still hasn't proved the future is bright, as he is keen on saying - 18% drop in stock since his tenure, continued loss of customers, high turn over in all levels of the organization and absence of convincing strategy. Nonetheless, compensation for the senior executive team is extremely rewarding for lack of results - just check out proxy statement. The cronyism is head scratching and never publicly acknowledged but privately questioned by everyone up to SVPs. O&M pays tens of millions to CEO's old firm since he arrived to develop his 'strategy' and implement change. Has not worked so now firm is micromanaging projects that everyone would have done anyways and promising big numbers to senior management because that's what they want to hear. Cutting costs to cover consulting expenses is major initiative with executive approval needed for almost every expense.
Organization is extremely top heavy with VPs constantly being hired, most with no former experience for their role.

Lack of performance, increasingly high turnover, layoffs, consultants running the business all lead to low morale and a frustrating experience.

    Advice to Management

There is a wealth of knowledge within the organization however, morale is at an all time low and teammate engagement is almost non-existent. Treat employees with respect, reward them as valuable contributors to the organization - just as you do with the consulting firms.
