Anyone work at Optum able to help me with a question? I was reviewing Optum’s employee benefits package and noticed that their health insurance package for the normal plan is like $366/pay or roughly 732/month? Am I reading that right? That seems incredibly high for a healthcare company; especially since the package has a $1,800 deductible and $3,600 out of pocket max? That’s just insane to me! Please someone let me know if I’m reading their data right?

    Pros

Systems are super easy. Antiquated but simple. Customers are great when their orders are filled on time and deliveries aren't late and wrong, but that hasn't happened in over a year in a regular basis.

    Cons

Having to smooth over customers because the operation has been in a tail spin for over a year due to new GM and weak leadership that don't have the customers best interest in mind. There only concern is serving their own needs and not caring about internal/external customers. Purchasing manager is never around and doesn't provide leadership to the team. Customer service manager is overbearing. Office manager doesn't as little as possible but acts like they are he glue holding things together.

An interesting company with missed opportunities. If it could get out of its own way, it could be a true market leader.

    Pros

O&M operates in the medical distribution market and unlike it's major competitors, O&M truly tries to get customers what they want and/or need. The Minors really did instill a "team" atmosphere in the company which is still there (mostly.) While the reputation is slightly tarnished, the O&M name is still valued and the years of solid community relations carries weight with those who remember. The company generally has a very intelligent and capable workforce who has access to the data needed to make the proper decisions.

    Cons

Leadership. While the executive leadership has improved and things are going better, especially in areas like investor relations, there are still many opportunities for improvement. The executives are hamstringed by their direct supports who seem to be jockeying for preferential treatment instead of openly discussing what their areas need. Mid-level management is severely lacking. Many people who have been promoted from within or brought from outside who are not suited for managing others and are more centered on advancing themselves than developing their reports. Infrastructure - O&M has cobbled together many different systems and methods from the various pieces it has acquired over the years. The result is groups and software that do not communicate well. In addition, tribal knowledge is very valuable as system processes are not documented and fewer people remain with the passing of each year who know how to actually use the old systems. This problem is compounded by the layers of middle management who are not familiar with the systems and do not listen to the everyday users of the systems when suggestions are given. In addition, O&M has delayed or cancelled many large projects to move these processes to new systems. If the company had made the investment and suffered the growing pains of moving multiple, outdated processes/software to a consolidated system, it would be in a much better position today. Lack of accountability - There has been constant organizational changes in the company and it seems many folks have learned to protect their small kingdoms, stay under the radar, and wait until the next org chart change. I have never worked in a company where employees would openly refuse to do what their manager asked and received acceptable reviews. And the review process has been a charade for years with goals that were outdated 2 months into the year and never reviewed through out the remainder of the year. In addition, managers would give new unofficial goals through out the year that never make it to the official list but were of utmost priority.

    Pros

Good pay/benefits (health insurance is good)

    Cons

Always working overtime, and can’t leave until all work it done. Most days working over 10 hours, with 5 day work weeks. Very strict on time off. People are always quitting/or being moved around so the workload is too much to handle at times. Managers play favorites You feel like you are there more than at home. Absolutely NO work life balance!

    Pros

Lots of Break out Rooms with Whiteboards for collaborative work, Events for team building

    Cons

Management wouldn't set time aside to provide clarification or work or talk about issues that arisen where guidance is needed. Manager wasn't always even polite and would talk about people in the open instead of pulling them aside. Segregated from team, excluded from team meetings or events.
