I worked at Oxbow full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very organized. We always had a plan and all the parts needed for a job before we started. I looked forward to work. And raised my family off of this company.

    Cons

Conditions were very hard at times. Bad roof and lots of methane. But with to people we had it was not that bad.

    Advice to Management

Re open and ill return in a flash.

I worked at Oxbow full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Was expanding, but not now. Pays well. Interesting business.

    Cons

Poor management. Inexperienced people in positions of authority. Corporate micromanagement by incompetent employees. Internal discord instead of expanding the business.

    Advice to Management

Focus on strategic growth and market.
    Treat employees with respect.
Don't allow corporate staff to mistreat operational personnel.

I worked at Oxbow full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Difficult to generalize. Extremely location dependent for company review. Generally (for professional staff)
    1. Excellent pay and benefits (again location dependent)
    2. Top notch people (at least at corp HQ)
    3. You can learn a lot depending on job function.

    Cons

Difficult to generalize. This is an energy company at heart and employment security is subject to energy market cycles. It is also a private company. Extremely location dependent for company review. Corp HQ review below.
Corp HQ (West palm Bch): Starting in 2004-2012, much growth thru acquisition. Executive suite and corporate functions started transition from smaller to larger company in the 2011-2012 timeframe with associated transitional pains with many new people at the helm. Considerably less of a "family type" work environment (everybody pitching in where necessary) after transition with associated stress for those below the executive suite. This should not be an issue for new employees as they would not have the "nostalgia" of the old work environment.

    Advice to Management

Just a note for below. Brian Acton is a great guy but has not been associated with Oxbow Carbon since the 2011-2012 timeframe. Current CEO (and owner) is William (Bill) Koch. Current COO (I believe) is Eric Johnson. I have no advice for company management.

I worked at Oxbow full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The executive conference table is the size of a football field

    Cons

    - Management is all a bunch of egomaniac
    - management is full of shady characters
    - management wastes so much money of litigation and other stupid projects. It's like throwing money into the black hole

    Advice to Management

Stop thinking about your bonus and start caring about your subordinates.

I have been working at Oxbow full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits and compensation are competitive; bonus' are paid when possibe. Lot's of good people to work with. Low turnover allows for people to really know how things work and not be a revolving door. Senior managment are approachable and actually remember you / your name. This does not happen in companies with thousands and 10s of thousands+ unless you are part of the top 1-2%. Not being a public company allows for some sanity away from decisions to meet your quarterly earnings, sometimes at the expense of better decisions by public companies. As Oxbow is smaller in people than its industry peers (1,000 vs. 10,000+), it is surprisingly nimble and you can make an impact much easier than the oppostive = lot's of people but very little capital and profit per person.

    Cons

Some offices / plant locations to work in can be a challenge, especially in the more industrial areas in the southern US and remote areas in Europe / Asia. The travel associated can be a bit tiresome getting to those remote locations. I would say an expected amount of 'how we do business' compared to other companies this size and capitalization. Coming from a 'small' company (<200), or a 'large' one (>5,000) does require getting used to the culture; especially if from a different industry or business sector.

    Pros

Their main offices are in West Palm Beach, Florida or the Woodlands, Texas which are nice places to live and recreation facilities in the area are really good.

    Cons

All decisions are made by upper management with very little responsibility given to anyone below Vice President level and much of their work is done behind closed doors. What are they doing behind there??

    Pros

There are very high quality employees here, slackers are not tolerated. The business is complicated and offers a lot of opportunities to learn. Managers are able to manage their staff how they see fit which offers a lot of flexibility in scheduling and work distribution. Technology, software and systems are ahead of the curve and everyone is provided quality computers and any software that is needed for their job.

    Cons

Limited hiring from within, the company is more likey to bring someone in from outside rather than promote from within. Some disorganization as to the direction where the company is going. Overall a good company.

    Advice to Management

Less knee jerk reactions to the problem of the moment and better planning would be advisable. Also, stay the course once a plan is in place.
