I worked at Oxfam full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Influential and effective INGO. Great work culture and US headquarters. Oxfam US attracts very smart and compassionate employees.

    Cons

The open office environment is not conducive to working with major donors and high level voluneers.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers who don't micromanage. Keep the Union--it tells everyone you walk the talk. And keep "Righting the Wrong". Oxfam is a wonderful organization.

    Pros

Fantastic people who are friendly and knowledgeable in their field of work.

    Cons

Restructuring program was not fully explained, so it has caused some anxiety among staff

    Advice to Management

Expand the internship program to allow employees to get a feel for training and management for upward mobility, and give students a look into the work environment

I have been working at Oxfam full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I have never been with a better community. Everyone is dedicated and cares about the work. It is an inspiring place.

    Cons

Complex matrix systems can be a major obstacle. Everyone is conditioned to become an expert that we get caught up trying to sound smart all the time and forget to ask questions, recognize failure, and learn.

    Advice to Management

Need more diversity in senior leadership. If there were more positions to grow into, more of the talent would stay.

I worked at Oxfam (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Lot's of opportunity to take on more responsibility and meet people working in other
    departments
-The people at Oxfam respect their interns and value the work they do. This is HUGE because many places do not do this, even in the NGO world.

    Cons

    - I didn't have any bad expierences while at Oxfam

    Pros

Oxfam America has amazing people and one of the most sophisticated and nuanced approaches in the field. If you're looking to work with smart, dedicated people in an environment that allows for a healthy work/life balance, this is the place.

    Cons

Very few, and no deal-breakers. When I was there, HR was generally considered a weak point, particularly at the senior levels. This was due more to cultural fit rather than competency, however.

    Pros

People who work at Oxfam America are smart very passionate about international development- they're also doing a lot of innovative work, especially on public-private partnerships. Got to work on a lot of great projects that really felt like they were not only having an impact, but changing the dialogue about what was possible in development.

    Office in Boston is wonderful.

    Cons

None that I can think of. It's really a great organization. There's not a lot of turnover, which I think is a sign of how wonderful Oxfam is that it can retain people of such a high standard.

I have been working at Oxfam full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Super staff, mission, and vision. I love the team and sense of camaraderie. The work environment is fantastic and the salary/benefits are very good.

    Cons

The constant change across the global confederation is wearing out the staff. While Oxfam America is well run, it is in danger of being dragged down by its European colleagues.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to staff, particularly the President who is basically non-existent most of the time.

I worked at Oxfam as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with are all extremely friendly, interesting, and intelligent. The workplace environment is highly supportive and open. The work was exciting.

    Cons

The number and length and organization of weekly team meetings was frustrating and seemed unnecessary and oriented around process and consensus
