I worked at PA Consulting Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting to work with a company that is clearly operational focused rather than strategy focused. Some great technical expertise in Cambridge

Good consultancy for local and central govt.

    Cons

Aggressive culture driven by partner and senior staff reward model which is flawed after 25 years in use to is time for a refresh. Dreadful management culture with really bad senior leadership in the UK.

No real concept of global business, the US business has shrunk from thousands to maybe a hundred as the UK has asset stripped and not understood the market (the CEO is a govt consultant who I doubt has ever had to travel more than a few miles from their office to reach a client and clearly does not understand global commercial industry

Recent Audit office findings demonstrate lack of professionalism at multiple levels

Currently owned by Carlyle - so I guess at some point will be split up and sold.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip, get rid of the CEO who is a joke

I have been working at PA Consulting Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting and varied range of projects. The staff are personable and extremely competent. The workplace is young and there is a good camaraderie between employees. Strong focus on personal/career development. Lots of flexibility to choose your areas of focus/interest.

    Cons

Compensation is somewhat low relative to the high workload.
Leadership often shows a limited sensitivity to work-life balance in terms of workflow management.

    Pros

Great place to meet new people from various offices in the company.

    Cons

    No advancement for support staff.

    Advice to Management

Support the growth of the support staff. Consultants seem to be catered to more in regards to training and advancement.

    Pros

Great company especially when it comes to technology and innovation
Values and mutual respect seem to matter (atleast on surface)
Good balance of risk averse when engaging with clients

    Cons

    1) Too slow: Extremely risk averse and too slow in new and existing client acquisitions
    2) Sales dropping: Losing steam and losing revenues as key players - both existing and new leaving
    3) Dog eat dog world: Bonus and remuneration schemes end up alienating colleagues thereby making it a harsh place in no time
    4) Huge disconnect between innovation labs and mainstream consulting : This just doesn't seem to work
    5) Pressure from American Private Equity majority shareholder Carlyle Group: This is becoming increasingly obvious and will lead to very painful situation.
    6) Disconnect with what market is asking: Consulting market is hard and even harder for PA since it has kept itself
    7) Disconnect / loss of connection with their key sales channels: As clients take more control of their finances, key business partners to PA within client orgs lose their budgeting power and thereby leading to sales depletion.
    8) Losing major key clients: This is very alarming and can be observed all over the place.

    Advice to Management

Start selling your assets that are performing well in time
Try to strike a deal with a firm now before valuation sinks way too below the expected returns
    Time to exit is NOW!

I worked at PA Consulting Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent total rewards program in place but recently the employee costs have gone up substantially with the purchase of the firm by The Carlyle Group

    Cons

With HQ in London, there is challenges operating in the US
Purchased by The Carlyle Group at the of 2015 and company is changing dramatically

    Advice to Management

Create a centralized resource management function - too many consultants on the bench/off the clock who could work on assignments/projects outside of their sector team if allowed to do so

I have been working at PA Consulting Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company that strives for a work-life balance while promoting an extreme merit-based culture. The team is full of highly intelligent and motivated self-starters that drive change and work hard to deliver great results for the firm and their clients.

    Cons

As with most consultancies, turn-over is high so there is a continually changing group of coworkers; and travel within the US-based positions can be extremely high.
