    I worked at PAETEC full-time

    Pros

My previous company was taken over by Paetec. At first we were all worried about pending layoffs, etc. My department wasn't hit by any layoffs and CEO Arunas came to our center and was very casual, playing around with employees (including throwing a frisbee around the center). Felt like part of the new company as we were invited to their annual Christmas party during the transition period and enjoyed the Friday calls that the CEO had with the entire organization. Was not the typical CEO in a large corp that has nothing to do with anyone but himself/herself and their closest, but instead was easily approachable and enjoyed working for Paetec.

    Cons

Not much to say, overall was a great company during short period to work for. Some micro managing took place which made job annoying at times, but that is expected in most large companies.

    Advice to Management

Allow people to show their strengths and talents, never hold people back

I worked at PAETEC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

PAETEC advocated employee advancement and assisted in encouraging a team atmosphere. I felt valued as an employee and enjoyed working for such a company.

    Cons

Integrations were slow to happen and legacy factions were allowed to continue rather than fully integrate. Annual layoffs were disruptive and disconcerting.

    Advice to Management

Integrations needed to be complete and not allow legacy groups to continue on their own instead of as part of the new company. Also, annual layoffs eliminated valuable resources within the company.

Office politics sometimes got in the way of being able to grow and move up within the organization.

    Pros

The people here are great! Fun atmosphere, close team, and management keeps and open door policy for all employees.

    Cons

Some may get lost in the sauce if they are not willing to work hard enough in sales. Very few receive accounts when they start therefore it is more of a hunting sales position.

A lot of paperwork that is redundant and TIME CONSUMING!

    Advice to Management

Get sales people selling! Hire a position which allows this to happen and takes on the job of putting orders through and completeing paperwork for engineering. Simple handoff process!

    Pros

My part of the company is full of excellent people, it's a high-performance environment.

    Cons

    IT is lumbering and bureaucratic.
HR is not always nimble, though in general their heart is in the right place.

    Advice to Management

Become profitable (not just cash-flow positive).
    Restore 401K match.
Cut down on the do-gooder wellness healthy choices stuff.
Fix some way-out-of-whack salaries even if times are tight (have to pick and choose of course).

    Pros

The commitment to uphold the 4 Core Values (Caring Culture, Open Communication, Unmatched Service, Personalized Solutions) makes PAETEC a unique player in the marketplace, not only for customers but for employees as well. The environment is supportive and encouraging, where managers don't need to take credit for the work of their team, but let individuals stand out.

    Cons

The internal community is not as strong as it could be. With little opportunity for interaction (no main gathering place for lunchtime, departments spread across several buildings/locations), it can be difficult to build relationships between the different functional areas.

    Advice to Management

Keep pursuing Open Communication and sharing from the top down -- it's not common to find a company so open to talking on a regular basis. Maintain the focus on the employees. While some will always take issue with anything/everything, the feeling that you are noticed and valued makes a big difference.

    Pros

Everyone was very friendly, including the senior management. You felt a true sincerity of you, and most managers tried to advance you as much as they could.

    Cons

Promotions were a bit curious as to who and why they were chosen. The overall business strategy is not highly sustainable, and we went through many rounds of layoffs, etc.

    Advice to Management

Really listen to your employees more, and realize that other ideas can be better than yours. Look for innovative ways to reward your employees. Listening and enacting is a great one.
