I have been working at PAX Program of Academic Exchange full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

PAX is a great organization working towards an important mission. At the heart of what they do is their students. Every day presents a new story of growth and cultural understanding from international students and the families and communities that host them. The organization provides it's employees with an exciting and comfortable environment.

    Cons

The work load and hours in late summer and early fall tend to become very strenuous.

    Pros

    Meeting great families and students

    Cons

The Region Director who hired me worked at another agency and was not familiar with PAX standard, so when I told her what was happening all she kept saying was" we did not do it that way". She initially promised families I could call and see if they wanted to host. Basically, I moved to another state to do the job she told me would pay a decent wage and sent documentation supporting that. She was completely unable to support me or help with questions. Furthermore she screwed up a placement by talking a family into being a welcome family but not explaining to them the 8 week responsibility. The family backed down and the problem started. PAX demands a lot of work yes, but they also want you to use your own business equipment/car etc. They will have you running in circles with inconsistencies. Her phone was always full so you could not leave a message. If you love volunteer work and cleaning up other people's messes and chaos this is for you, the people you meet are interesting, however, PAX will talk out of both sides of their mouth to you and use you. I know! I am contacting the BBB with a complaint.

    Advice to Management

Do not be so self involved & think you are helping others when you are just working out of your EGOs and pay a salary rate with incentives, instead of screwing people over repeatedly.

    Pros

Learning about the world, other countries and cultures is a definite plus! They have great trips and fly employees to new locations every year for annual training meeting.

    Cons

You will not get paid what you are worth, the employees are paid quarterly and it's far more work than on anticipates. Some months are completely silent and then there is a week of chaos.

    Advice to Management

skip the trips and pay people more! This isn't a career it's a past time.

I worked at PAX Program of Academic Exchange full-time

    Pros

Concept of facilitating education exchanges is great

    Cons

Too many to share. Be prepared to work 24-7 in summer. Be prepared to do unethical things to place a student.

    Advice to Management

This is a nonprofit and the IRS should investigate shady practices. Top management do not even appear on public record tax forms as they are all "independent contractors" not even employees. The sham of "merging" two businesses together with less than 10 million between them and paying the top snake 350k plus living expenses is hardly In keeping with the Guidepost guidelines for the non profit organization. Advice: run back to Asia our wherever you came from befor the irs catches up with you.

I have been working at PAX Program of Academic Exchange part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I've worked for 4 exchange programs for over 20 years. PAX is 100% better than all the rest. The program puts students first while still being sure host families & schools are considered important. There's lots of field support from HQ & 1st rate professional marketing materials are all available online.

    Cons

The database isn't the best, but that's in the process of an overhaul so hopefully it'll be better when it's rolled out.
Getting people hired on is laborious.

    Advice to Management

Streamline the hiring process, remove duplicated things. Most of ELC training is covered by Don certification. Lots of interview questions are answered in their inquiry.
