    Pros

Unlike many other companies, the CEO and upper management actually understand the product catalog and can have a meaningful technical conversation. This generally leads to better high-level decisions about product lines and R&D planning.

    Cons

The Houston office is small with not a lot of room for growth. If you want long-term career advancement options as an engineer, you'd be better off in one of the offices in California or British Columbia.

Product engineering schedules are usually set by marketing/sales teams, and rarely have any connection to reality (e.g. only scheduling a week for a month-long hardware prototype test process). The result is an environment where everyone is running around putting out proverbial fires and there's no time to improve processes and do things the right way.

    Pros

Good overall benefits package. Lots of technology, challenging work. Teams are committed to success. Good opportunities for motivated employees. First and second line managers care.

    Cons

Like a lot of tech companies there was quite a bit of schedule erosion due to constant feature creep from customers. Some sacrifice of long term commitment for short term gains.

    Advice to Management

Enforce more rigid customer relations. Stay committed to long term goals and opportunity markets.

I have been working at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team within my organization and also a flexibility to let me do what is needed to get the work done.

    Cons

In the midst of a takeover and so it has become difficult to get everyone to focus. This is just the nature of the beast.

    Advice to Management

I think we just need to get through being bought and then it will settle down. Ultimately time will tell if that is the case.

    Pros

Great people to work with, and the products are interesting. Recently there have been major pushes for advancing into new directions.

    Cons

Acquisition is killing the company. Too many layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Keep your employees in the "loop".
Don't overload one person with many many many tasks.
People have to sleep to be more productive.

I have been working at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work environment. Site committee do good job of organizing team activities. Employee stock purchase discount. 401k match. Medical, Dental and Eye care plans at competitive rates. Competitive salaries. Opportunities to take on additional responsibilities if you're willing to make sure you get your assigned tasks completed too.

    Cons

Most sites are quite small so difficult to move up if senior people aren't leaving. IT runs thru Canada which results in extremely poor network performance.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on rewarding on results.

For silicon design itself, very good people for all aspects.
For customers and markets it knows well, very good customer focus.

    Cons

Product portfolio too broad to invest.
