    Pros

    I worked at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Above-average salary, mostly friendly co-workers. Used to be a great place to work.

    Cons

For years, all corporate decisions and polices driven by cost-cutting/efforts to raise the stock price. Social committee and any interactions outside of your group (beyond those required by the job) became non-existent. Career development and continuous learning opportunities also fell by the wayside.

    Advice to Management

N/A - the company was acquired by Microsemi Corporation in 2015

I have been working at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people (the majority of them, anyway). I feel like I’ve made some lifelong friends there and have been lucky to collaborate with some truly clever engineers.

    Cons

PMC is a notoriously sycophantic work environment. If you are career-oriented and are willing to play the game with the big boys you will go far. To be clear, you need to be able to meet/exceed expectations to further your career, but that is secondary to creating the perception of your value to the senior management.

    Advice to Management

A more consistent and evolving training program would be appreciated. The current training program has the feel of “just going through the motions”.

    Pros

People I work with directly are great, made lots of friends while I was there. Health benefits are decent.

    Cons

Apparently the salaries peaked in the late 90's - early 2000's. Didn't get a raise for over 10 years. Salaries are based on other "similar" peer groups outside of PMC. After a while you engineer a way to make the salary work in your favour.....

    Advice to Management

too little too late...........must treat employees better these last 10 years

I have been working at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Hires awesome and very talented staff. Has a great life work balance as a "policy". Great work hours and lots of room for advancement if you are an Engineer.

    Cons

Is top heavy in management. At times the management teams set very unrealistic and unreachable goals for their awesome engineers and staff. This in turn reflects on the amount of lay-offs in this company.

    Advice to Management

Don't do survey if not willing to repair the problem once results are in!
Company did do a survey to all staff. They received a 98% response. Their test score was 37%.
Said they would change, fix and or repair. They did not follow their own plan. Very disappointing when that happens...Morals drop to an all time low!

    I worked at PMC-Sierra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

PMC-Sierra is a global company with R&D several R&D sites in Canada, USA as well as India and China. Interesting, challenging work.

    Cons

The semiconductor industry can be cyclical so despite the good people and good products downturns can happen and there may be layoffs.

    Advice to Management

It's hard to find good people and to build effective teams. There have been several layoffs over the years and finding a way to be responsive to the upturns without having to layoff good people on the downturns would help maintain moral and build even stronger teams.

I worked at PMC-Sierra as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are generally very good, flexible hours, good gym (Burnaby)

    Cons

Very reactive to market conditions so layoffs and/or program changes are frequent.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to re-allocate staff rather than laying them off. Perhaps moves to related departments?
