I worked at PMI Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Environment set by upper level management was very positive, and encouraged loyalty to the company. It felt like working with family members - very little company politics went on and colleagues mostly supported one another.

    Cons

Limited resources led to sporadic training, expense curtailment, etc. Morale decreased over time as we were hit with budget cuts and layoffs.

    Pros

Great employees, good pay, awesome vacation package (4 weeks at the door), work life balance.
They encourage transfers between departments for professional growth.

    Cons

It's a boys' club, men are preferred for promotions over women.

    Advice to Management

Company is in run off, so I don't think it matters.

    Pros

Great work environment in tough economical times. People are always thinking out of the box to get the job done no matter what it takes.

    Cons

Only cons are that this is a bad business to be in the current economy.

    Advice to Management

    keep the ship afloat

    Pros

I loved this company and the job more than life itself. I am devastated that they downsized and eliminated my position and area. I had been meeting and exceeding my goals each month.

    Cons

They just had a lay off and an early retirement

    Advice to Management

Instead of having peoples jobs eliminated, comissions should have been eliminated until the company regained profitability . the base salary was good and the staff you had would have continued to grow the company.

"PMI is a great place to work - but it could be better"

    Pros

Through a profit organization, PMI Group puts their employees first. This isn't to say people before revenue, necessarily, but the environment is such that everybody is made to feel just as important as anyone else.

    Cons

They can lean a bit too far on the conservative side. Granted, it's an insurance company - and "ready, aim, shoot" is better than "ready, shoot, aim" - but in some instances they need to find a better balance. I've seen to many projects in "ready, ready, aim, ready, reload ... "

    Advice to Management

Bring more entry-level people into brainstorming. Get the ideas from the people actually doing the work. In theory (and it should be in practice), they know more about what they do than anyone else, so it makes sense to find out what that work is.

    Pros

Everyone I worked with here was extremely nice, even as the company was going through tough times. They generally treated their employees well, with company events, decent hours, and so on. It wasn't an extremely stressful place to work. Salary was good.

    Cons

I didn't feel that the management prioritized talent and ideas over experience. Employees who had been with the company longest tended to get promotions. A few employees with completely unrelated company experience were promoted into roles they knew nothing about (e.g. an HR rep becoming an IT manager, that sort of thing). The company structure didn't allow for a lot of innovation.

  7. "Nice People, learned a lot"

    Pros

Both management and staff very friendly, good work/life balance, good health care. Regular All Hands meetings are enjoyable and motivate you to help grow the business. Free donut Fridays are great too!

    Cons

Pay is a bit lower than similar Bay Area companies. There can be too much politics, especially at the vice president level.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to your employees! Many high level decisions about the future of the business are made at the VP/SVP level without input from lower level employees.
