I have been working at PNC Financial Services Group as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

PNC has a great company culture, excellent upper management and is willing to spend the time to mentor interns and show them the ropes!

    Cons

Sometimes they seem a bit hesitant of overworking interns, so they end up not giving us enough work! It comes from a good place because they want interns to like the company, but we want to learn and don't mind juggling a lot of work.

    Advice to Management

Utilize the interns to their full capacity, we can handle heavier workloads!

    Pros

Nice buildings, decent benefits, solid company Future is bright for the enterprise. If you are young you have a chance for advancement.

    Cons

Employees used to be valued more than they are now. Meaning before the current CEO took the reins. They are attempting to weed out veteran employees and the knowledge base declines. And PNC wants to act like a tech company
by packing employees into smaller spaces with no privacy.

    Advice to Management

People matter, are not simply a drag on earnings.

I have been working at PNC Financial Services Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

PNC has a good 401 K plan. The vacation benefits are good.

    Cons

This company is only for executives. There is a huge gulf between the everyday ran k and file employees and people at the director level and above. Process and metrics are king. Change management is very time consuming and not very user friendly for the IT staff. IT staff has been divided into change the bank teams and run teams. Knowledge base has been spread too thin. In addition, there are agile teams. Company is diving head fist into agile even on their
legacy mainframe applications which are not easily to fit into the agile development model. Executives hold town hall presentations to try to connect with the rank and file staff but the meetings are mainly an opportunity for the executives to tell everyone what a great job the 'executives' are doing. The Q and A sessions at the town hall meetings are a joke, I have never seen so many softball questions and planted questions in my career. Due to the creation of so many new teams, the knowledge base is spread very thin.

People are being asked to work on projects involving applications they have no experience in.

There is a shortage of people who know their applications, Directors and management above the directors seem to think that everyone is a plug and play employee and that in-depth application knowledge is not needed.

Too many of the players in IT don't have any knowledge about the applications
From the project managers to the business analysts to the developer to the
QA testers, , there is a real problem.

A lot of people are driving with their eyes closed.

The executives think the solution is hiring more contractors.

    Advice to Management

Realize that there are valuable employees below the director level. Allow employees time to stay in one position to accumulate system knowledge.

QA testing is horrible. It is project based and risk based.

The testers are a collection of analysts who have not been trained in the applications and off-shore contractors who don't know anything about the application.

The bottom line is that the executives want to treat IT employees like plug and play factory workers and they have no respect for the rank and file staff.

It is all about the executives.

    Pros

All of the people are great to work with. On most teams there is a good work/life balance. In the TDP you get to learn a lot about the business and about different roles in the technical realm which can be interesting. TDP is great if you aren't sure what you want to do in technology or if you want to be a business systems analyst (as the program builds a great foundation to be one).

    Cons

The program itself might make you feel like you're in a high school workshop teaching you how to communicate with others, unfortunately, it gets that bad sometimes. The program is run by people that do not know enough about technology to be guiding budding careers. If you want to be an application developer, just apply to a role through their careers site. You'll make more. Very small raise coming out of program and into defined role.

    Advice to Management

The company is going in a good direction. The TDP program should be restructured a bit if you want to acquire talent and keep that talent.

    Pros

Opportunity to move around and gain a broad spectrum of experience.

    Cons

Once you are hired the advancement opportunities do not pay, so while there is a lot of opportunity, when you are promoted you will not be paid a market rate. It is common for people to leave and come back a couple years later.
