I have been working at PNNL full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Tons of opportunities for all sorts of different projects. A lot of leeway to totally switch what kind of engineering you're doing. Uses the latest tech by and large with freedom depending on project to pick up and use new things.

    Cons

Government, so not super keen on open source. Pretty restrictive of what you can do outside of work. Highly matrixed so if you're not a self starter you'll be left behind.

    Advice to Management

If you could embrace open source more and conferences more - engaging the community. It would really make it a lot more fun to work there. Also the pay isn't super up to speed.

I have been working at PNNL full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities, very easy to totally switch what you're working on. Close to the latest tech, great friendly people to work with. Not pigeon holed.

    Cons

Highly matrixed so if you don't get out there you might get ignored. Have to be a self starter to make a name for yourself then the project opportunities never stop coming.

    Advice to Management

Let people go to more conferences and let them contribute to open source. That would be the biggest thing for me, the restriction on open source contribution.

I have been working at PNNL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is very accommodating and provides researchers with countless sources in networking capabilities to help themExcel in their research.

    Cons

Easy to get behind on projects in some cases due to lots of red tape. Even though its to ensure safety, sometimes the protocols for conducting certain tasks are a bit too cautious and end up causing extra time.

    Advice to Management

I like it when the check I go show interest. Haven't noticed too many cases of micromanaging.

I have been working at PNNL as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

PNNL has been the best job I have ever had. For being such a large company, there is still a sense of unity between each individual employee. Everyone works very hard, seem to love what they do, and are very good at it. I also like how they make a large effort to reduce their environmental footprint.

    Cons

The only con I would say about PNNL is its geographic location, it is on the very edge of the Tri-Cities, making it quite the drive for some people who don't choose to live in "old Richland".

    Advice to Management

I can not think of anything the management needs to work on, I have always been able to get a hold of my managers.

    Pros

Best people you can hope to work with. Fantastic mission to work towards. Often this place will give you the feeling that you are making a difference in the world.

    Cons

It is a sink or swim environment where salaried employees are treated like hourly employees and you are expected to meet minimum hourly requirements. This leads to poor work-life balance and until you have become established with a good reputation, you should not expect to be able to live your life outside of work.

    Advice to Management

Give TGMs more resources to manage rather than the 4 hours per week to take care of 10 people they have right now!

    Pros

Very safety conscious and encourages career development. People are very friendly and helpful. They are always willing to answer questions or concerns about lab protocols and policies.

    Cons

Must network frequently to be part of enough projects to carry a 40 hr/week schedule.

I worked at PNNL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a good place to work if you embrace the culture. Benefits and work/life balance are great. You will not get out of your box often so if you are good with staying in your box/your lane then it is good for you. Depending on where you are at you may see a ton of travel. That can be a Con if you have a family but it presents great opportunities for those that enjoy travel.

    Cons

PNNL still does not know what to do with their younger to medium aged workforce. They struggle to keep the younger staff because they continue the embrace the old way of doing business by promoting based on a persons time at PNNL vs. skill. Pay is usually lower unless you come in at your value. Eventually you will have to deal with small increases as you climb the ladder and depending on how you advance your pay may be below new staff coming in at higher levels. Who you know really does make a difference. That can be a Pro depending on who you are.

    Advice to Management

Work on a plan that embraces your younger to middle aged staff. PNNLs future is in their youth not the older staff that are holding on to their jobs as long as they can before they retire.
