I have been working at PPG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent Benefits overall. Typically good people overall. little travel and overtime in IT at least.

    Cons

The norm is to try to do too much with too little and quality across the board suffers. As developers we have to fight to do things even minimally correct. The organization as a whole has a terrible relationship with IT and does not value it. Thinking regarding IT is at least 20 years behind the curve.

    Advice to Management

Change the mentality of the company to realize that IT is part of the lifeblood of any modern company that hopes to thrive. IT is not an expense to be avoided.

I worked at PPG full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

When a project was well managed and had moderate success for time and budget, the rewards were generous and shared.

    Cons

If you happened to be chosen to work on a project that had an unrealistic schedule and/or an inexperienced or incompetent manager, then you would have the unpleasant experience of a death march, spending days, nights, week-ends to meet an unrealistic roll-out schedule -- not the best way to create and implement reliable supply chain software solutions. The company relies heavily on onshore/offshore talent from India's big consulting firms, and while I understand this is "normal" in the industry, I find it unfair and un-American not to give the same work opportunities to aspiring programmers who have paid their dues, worked through the training, and proven through fixing code, a level of expertise. Instead, I found a tendency for management, in a top-down fashion, to give most of the best work to the contractors and give the old technology work and maintenance to the American full-time employee programmer analysts.

    Advice to Management

Take your own advice by living by some of the corporate internal mantras on ethical responsibility, working smarter, and meeting time and budget. You may want to take a step back and reflect on the reasons people give HR for leaving in the exit interview. In my own exit interview, I felt like I was on trial and made to feel persona non grata, when, in fact, I had been a very dutiful, timely, and constructive employee, deserving of at least a thank you on my way out. The ultimate reason I left PPG was that I was lied to by a manager and this lie directly impacted my career movement within the company.

Great working environment, employees are friendly and helpful. Sometimes you have free donuts and lunch.

    Cons

Lack of training, especially no working experience you will learn nothing and keep scratching your head what is your actual responsibilities.

I worked at PPG full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

not much except 401(k), paid vacation, benefits

    Cons

A bunch of spoiled employees who will back stab you and get you in trouble with management for their benefit. Different rules for different employees, if you have been there for 25+ years, you have one set of rules, employees with less than 10 years have a different set of rules. Make all employees follow the rules no matter how long they have been employed there. Very difficult to move from one department to another, once you are hired in, good luck trying to move out of that position. Unfair compensation, they will pay a new hire more than what you were hired in for, even if they started a month after you. Be expected to work mandatory overtime on weekends and on major holidays, not family friendly, company does not care about their employees.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to stop catering to Managers and start listening to both sides with a witness before taking the managers side. They also need to stop catering to the 25+ year employees and listen to the employees who have been there less than 10 years. Management will not and does not want to hear what you have to say unless you have been there for 25+ years.
