I worked at PSEG full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay was decent, good people to work with, good benefits, bonuses were available to earn, supervisors could earn overtime.

    Cons

Long hours, non-paid professional time for exempt employees, only fixed what was absolutely necessary for the plant to run, poor technical references, they expected teams to perform function of much larger groups ( undermanned). Poorly managed overall.

    Advice to Management

Provide people the personnel necessary to get the job done. You can't hold people accountable for not meeting the team goals if you don't provide the tools and guidance to do so.

I have been working at PSEG full-time for more than a year

    Pros

High salaries and large bonuses. Willing to provide training to entry level employees that meet ANSI requirements. That's about it for the pros.

    Cons

Confused leadership, most of which have been promoted beyond their ability. Non-union employees often work long hours without compensation. Training staff is often belittling to new employees. Constant struggles between union and management. High turnover rate for management. HR is completely incompetent. It took over a year to get my pay issues corrected. HR is also extremely racist. If you aren't black, they probably can't help you. V.P. comes down a few times a year to tell you that the company is about to shutdown the nuclear side.

    Advice to Management

Bring in some new people for management. Recruit people based on their abilities and place them where needed instead of trying to push everyone through the same mold. This causes several parts of the organization to be understaffed in the leadership area. Specifically the maintenance departments.

I worked at PSEG full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Awesome work environment with a team of really great people. Management was friendly, down to earth and straight forward. Continuing education program was great.

    Cons

Long hours and high-stress levels during certain times of the year (part of the job though).

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing

I have been working at PSEG full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This is a good, solid company with very few layoffs. I have been happy with all of the managers I've worked for. There is generally good work life balance. Pay is excellent, and tuition reimbursement is a wonderful benefit. I like coming to work. The work can be challenging but in a good way, and most of the time I feel very balanced - there's enough work but not so much that I feel overwhelmed.

    Cons

There is inequity amongst areas of the company. Some people are allowed flexible schedules and work from home options while others are not. During storms, those in the utility find themselves working long hours. Some managers want you to be on call all the time. It is very difficult for people in certain roles to move up within the company, and it can be difficult to switch departments. This is a unionized & non-unionized organization, which can be challenging. Corporate culture varies greatly from department to department.

    Advice to Management

For a company with such a strong emphasis on safety, it seems silly that those in non-essential roles are not given work from home options during storms. People that directly interface with power lines, with customers, etc. and their superiors, I fully understand. But other roles should be given the option to be both safe and productive by working from home.
