    Pros

Really exciting work, there's always something new to try and figure out. Changing the way sequencing is done and used.

    Cons

It seems like the company swigs back and forth from being on the cusp of making it big or dying but never quite does either

    Pros

Good company culture. Team spirit. Very capable management focused on creating value for investors, employees, and all stake holders. Vibrant and energetic work environment.

    Cons

May be hard to have work-life balance; compensation level may not compete favorably with other companies in the area; inevitable politics in some corners

    Advice to Management

Implement a training program to train middle managers; have mandatory peer review system; encourage open communication across all levels and departments; bring under-performing areas up to speed

I have been working at Pacific Biosciences full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent company culture - work/life balance, open communication, collaborative environment.

CEO is engaging with employees, and leads frequent all-hands company meetings with open Q&A. Communication from leadership is excellent.

People are friendly and welcoming. People from different departments are very helpful. It feels like everyone is on the same team, and working together towards the same goals.

Management supports employees who aspire to advance their careers within their team, or with a different team.

Management listens to employees, and genuinely cares that employees are happy.

    Very smart and talented people.

Ping pong is very popular at PacBio. Many employees seem to really enjoy this activity.

    Cons

Facebook buses causing increased traffic at this intersection.

But, this should no longer be a problem after we move to our new campus, also located in Menlo Park.

    Advice to Management

Management has done an excellent job retaining the small company feel of PacBio. They should make sure we keep this culture as we continue to grow.

Keep doing the all-hands company meetings. This is a good way for employees to receive updates from management.

Need to be process driven, implement product dev process

    Pros

You get to work on cutting-edge technology that makes a difference to the world. People here are very hard-working, smart, and have a good sense of humor. Being in the informatics group means the job can be flexible and can work remotely (some employees don't even live in the area). Opportunity to work with a lot of different customers worldwide; get to see all the cool science that is happening.

    Cons

    - like any reasonably sized company, communication can get lost in layers of management
    - different groups don't always communicate effectively leading to wasted time and resources
    - unlike academia, you don't get to work on a problem deeply and have to move on; temporary solutions sometimes will come back to haunt you later

    Pros

Interesting technology, great combination of fundamental optics, genomics, materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, data analysis, bioinformatics.

    Cons

Small company with the management structure of a larger company. Too many meetings with mid-level managers giving their opinion in order to be heard, rather than contributing to solving problems.

    Pros

The technologies being worked on is cutting edge and multidisciplinary. There are some very talented people at PacBio.

    Cons

The layoffs affected employee morale and resulted in many of the best employees in leaving the company. No more lobster fest.

    Advice to Management

Management now understands the significance of the layoffs and how even retained employees were affected. Providing stability in uncertain times is critical for the morale p.

I have been working at Pacific Biosciences full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've been here for 8+ years with some of the SMRTest people you'll find anywhere, all working together to solve some really hard biology, engineering, and computational problems.

    Cons

Sure, we don't have the cafeterias and chefs that Google and Facebook have, but our deli counters, fridges, and pantries are stocked with a variety of healthy and not so healthy foods. Also, espresso machines sometimes break (probably due to overuse), but Facilities is on top of it quickly.

    Advice to Management

The current management, with Mike H at the helm, is steering the ship in the right direction, addressing appropriate market segments.
